Gapless ring

Leroy, you reminded me of something I didn't really want to remember. I saw this many years ago (don't ask how many years, I can't remember, the age thing). Our milk cows were periodically taking off and running like crazy with their tails out straight behind them. Later we found out they were being bit by a certain type of fly. The fly bites them down low on their legs, then the developing larvae travel upwards underneath the skin, until they are somewhere on their back, as I remember it. The larvae then grow huge. the lumps we saw were about the size of large grapes. The way we got them out was to squeeze them like you would do with a pimple. GROSS!!!

Don

They are called "Warble Fly's" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warbles

There were chemicals you could put on their backs to prevent them, when the lumps were squeezed a larvae that looked like a maggot would pop out. A real delicacy.:hihi:

Sorry Al, maybe the thread title should be changed to: 'All Things Gross":rolleyes5:

Update!

the engine has been rebuilt this week-end, and we just reinstall it in the bay today.

Now we still have to redress it and start it.

The rebuilt was trouble free;
  • new timing set
  • new main and rod bearings
  • new HO oil pump
  • New water pump
  • rebuilt heads
  • new hydraulic lifters and push rods
  • new IP, a 5521S
  • new injectors and glow plugs
  • new harmonic balancer
... and new piston rings with 2nd gapless rings :D

The install of the 2nd rings has been very easy. Once you put the machined ring, the gapless one does fit itself. I put some Permatex install lube on the rings so as to be able to compress the all thing and push it into the cylinder.

More to come ;)

Just in time. I'll post some picture of mine soon when I get back to them. Have two cylinders done.
And no don't post any gross videos waiting on my update

She's alive

:slomo:

We finished dressing up the engine, bleed the IP and injectors, and she started right away

Let her iddle for few minutes. She had some hiccups and puff of white smoke, then purr like a kitten.

I opened the oil filler tube and saw some slight blow-by, same at the oil dipstick. I took her for a drive, driving her like if I just stole her.

After about 80 kilometers, the blow-by have reduced and is just about noticeable. The engine runs nice and quiet, veeeery smooth

Did you ajust the end gaps?

Mine are very close, but had to file off .004 on the 2 holes Ive done so far.

Did you hone the cylinders to break the glaze? I did and I had 0 to start with and still have 0 blowby with the gapless rings on the 1993.
I should have gapped mine, but didn't. Got lucky there, but, it may bite me in the butt if the temp ever gets out of control. Pun intended as bad things happen if the ends of the rings but up with expansion and run out of room...

If you have rings "converted" to gapless out of a set, you'll likely be fine as the ring sets are usually right on. If you have buy rings directly from Total Seal then you will have to file-to-fit the rings. This is a very careful process that requires finesse to remove all the sharp edges that would contact the sealing wall. Getting the right gap is file, test, file, test, thing.
