I just received my set of rings, with n°2 gapless rings.

Thanks to Leroy who has been able to provide me very fast

Her is one set. You can see the stock n°2 ring machined, and the black ring which will transform the all thing in a gapless ring.

Ready to insert

Inserted.

Now, the question is: How do I have to install them:

I mean, what do I have to care about, as the black ones seem to be brittle. Should I add oil or some engine assy lube on the 2 rings?

If I look the piston from above, do I have to install the black one above, facing me? D.jpg

or under, facing the rod? E.jpg

Whats funny is I on your side of the world now but cant answer the question, I'd want a set in my hands to confirm. Warwagon could tell you.

I've always been of the opinion that the 6.5s don't have enough rings, so it would seems both would kinda make up for it

The geometry of a keystone shaped cross section gap-less compression ring might not be ideal?

Another thought, any trapped pressure between two rings will un-seat usually both rings.

Right on both counts. Seems to be what the experts say (about the trapped pressure) anyway. On ours its much more the way the top ring is shaped that would make it very difficult (from the ring sets I have seen) our top ring is key stone shaped like said, if a set out there has a squared off top ring it would be doable.

I emailed total seal and this was there response

Les,
Only in a low rpm / pressure application like a pump or compressor. In an automotive type application theory tells us it could trap pressure between them in turn loosing ring seal. Though it has been done successfully in the past. The testing we’ve done we didn’t see a “big” improvement with double vs single gapless.

Best Regards
Keith Jones

I’ve been told you can’t use gapless top and second rings at the same time. If not could you please explain why. Thank you Les

That plus shape of the ring (Like 3500GMC said)

Of the people using them, they say it really keeps the oil clean.
And BTW the ring set I sent Matuva was going to go in my engine. So now Ive bought 2 more sets 1 for me and another incase anyone needs a set? I'll be sending them out for the machine work when I get back next Monday.

That' what I was suspecting. Thanks Leroy ;)

BTW, did you see the Stones? I heard that the concert at Perth - Western Australia was postponed if not cancelled. Mike Jaeger is devastated after his girl friend was found dead in their flat of New York. Probably suicide they say.

Yes we were lucky to see them. They put on a great show. I also got to see them in La California back in 85-86 time.
Really sucks to hear his girl friend is dead.

3500GMC answered the 'why no top gapless' long ago with the excessive carbon/soot the 6.x diesel 1st ring gets plowed through.

I de-glazed the cylinders and dipped the pistons in regular diesel oil. It took all day to get all the rings on esp with the split rail oil control rings.

Years later I still have clean oil in the engine to where I can see the markings on the dipstick through the oil.

That's enough for me to try them, should be a no brainer for anyone rebuilding an engine. Im exited to see my own results.

Alain, how for are you on the build?

Well leroy, we are supposed to start this week-end.

Now that the Ted's is gone, I have no choice, I must rebuild one engine.

I have all parts in hands now, we just need to find enough time. But I will do my best to do it as fast as possible, and I will probably open another thread for the rebuild
