Fuel issues: Hiccups and stalls - air bubbles

Stopped by the local speed/diesel shop and ordered a BUNCH of AN fittings. This is not going to be cheap by any means, but it should be bulletproof and done better than GM ever did it. From what I can remember ordering, I have a 8AN and 6AN bulkhead fitting coming in, fittings for those to convert to hard pipe for the pickup tube and return tube, fittings to go to rubber hose to go from tank to frame rail, then fittings to go back to hard line, rolls of aluminum 1/2" and 3/8" lines, and a fitting to go from 1/2" hard line to 3/8" pipe (although now that I think of it I should get it from 1/2" hard to 1/2" pipe) for going into the pre-filter kit. I will probably leave the plumbing I have in place from the filter to the lift pump. From there, I still need to figure out what parts to go from the lift pump up to the FFM and then figure out the return line too (in 3/8"). It'll be some work to get this all done, but I hope to never have another fuel issue again with plumbing like this.

Sadly, I could probably have bought the raptor kit from Leroy and it's lines for less than this is going to wind up costing me...

All buttoned up except the steel plate under the tank for now. I'm about to head outside and see if it starts. I wound up doing AN-8 from the sending unit dip tube all the way up to the pre-filter. I did AN-6 on the return line. I couldn't find the proper size hose barb for the vent tube, so I just used a pipe nipple and clamped the vent tube onto that. I used my pressure bleeder to force diesel backwards through the pump and filter until I quit hearing bubbles in the tank.

Let's hope for the best!

Well, it appears all is well. I just put 70 miles on with several start and stops. No hiccups or lack of fuel. In fact, going up hills now it doesn't seem to downshift as often or as early when it does. I think my fuel issues may be solved finally.

Awesome possum.

One thing though, is the pick up/return done with diesel rated hose? In my mind I was expecting to see metal lines.
You should have a fuel system to last along time now

The pickup tube is copper. The return is diesel rated hose that is slightly longer than the pickup tube. That is so when it hits the bottom of the tank is bends and fuel is dumped away from the pickup.

Ah, I see the copper now. Why not the return aswell?

Looks good. I've been wanting to make some pick ups, but not a big need for them now. Maybe as trucks get older?

I figured since rubber return was good for stock, it would work as well for this. I guess copper would have worked.

I could probably experiment with my stock sending unit and see if the pickup and return lines can be cut off and if there's enough room for AN fittings. If there is, you might be able to put together a kit for people. You may even want to build complete sending units with new plates and such so people can replace them. I imagine a AN to stock threaded line adapter you could sell or new lines made from rubber hose with AN ends. Of course, by the time you get that involved, the Raptor kit is within price range.

The idea has been in my head for years. As these things get older there will be a need.

The factory return is more like a plastic tube Right? It may not be a consearn, but I'd be afraid the rubber hose would deteriate in time and leave chunks in the tank. I also think just the inner liner of the rubber hose is diesel rated, not sure if outer will hold up??

My stock return line is rubber in the tank. At this point that tank is staying up in there until I have a problem. If the rubber hose deteriorates, I'll change out the AN fitting and put a copper return in the tank too.

I had no idea bio reacted with copper, but since I don't run bio I guess it doesn't matter.

Pulled about 4000# today with a trailer. It was really nice to pull up hills and maintain speed again, and with that new Diamond Eye exhaust EGT's never went over 900 degrees.

I ran copper lines in my WVO set up for 2ish years, never had a problem, Actual Bio may be a different story?
DE makes a great system eh?

Nice. It's good to here problems done. Keeps me positive about my hard ones. The higher the conductivity the material, the more corrosion it take on from bio due to electrlosys- so make sure everything has a good ground to reduce problem.
