Fuel Injector pump

I have a 1998 GMC Savana 19 pasenger bus with 6.5L turbo engine in it. A month after I bought it it lost power and would go more than 30 mph. I took it to the shop and they changed the fuel injector pump ($1,000.00). Two years and 20,000 miles later it starts surging (lurching) without warning. I almost hit several cars. The engine would just rev up and it would shoot out a ton of black smoke only when it would surge. I investigaded and found out that it could be the PMD. I took the old one off the old pump and put it on the new pump and it did not surge anymore. About that time I noticed a ticking noice in the engine when I would accelerate. A rapid ticking noise kind of like an injector. I changed the fuel injectors. The noise didn´t go away. It slowling got worse and worse but now only when it was idleing. When I went fast it didn´t make the noise. Until last week when all of a sudden when I was driving up a small hill the noise started strong and loud all the time and started shooting a lot of white smoke with smell of diesel. I took it to the shop and the are telling me that the Injector pump needs to be replaced because because it is pumping too much fuel in the cylinder and that is the hard tapping (knocking) noise I hear. They say that the pump has destroyed one of the fuel injectors. I would just like to know if anyone has some advice. I am really fed up with all this. During this time I also replaced the head gaskets. What do you think?:mad2:

The shop is bending you over. I'll mail you some KY if you want to keep going there.

The pump either pumps or it doesn't. Then pmd went out it went to full fuel, could have fouled an injector but if replacing those didn't help the problem is in the heads. Could be a bent valve or bad rocker buttons. If you pull the heads to investigate then do arp studs.

Tanman,

The PMD wouldn´t cause a knocking noise or cause the injector pump to put out too much diesel would it? Is that what you are saying. Because when I put the second PMD on the bus (the used one from the old original pump) it did put out a little white smoke now that I think about it. I am a missionary and live in Guatemala. The mecanics here are horrible. They really do not know anything.

The pmd will not cause the knock itself but it could be a side effect from the over rev/over fuel. Leroydiesel has pmd relocation kits that will help with pmd failure.

Over fueling could have burnt an injector but it's more likely you have valve train issues or rod/piston issues worst case.

You could ruin an injector via a broken spring and have it fire early. Dirt stuck in one etc. This will melt a piston quick and would have done so by now.

Likely you have a busted rocker button or collapsed lifter - One valve isn't moving anymore with the white smoke.

Do you have any puffs in the blowby by removing the oil filer cap and then idling the engine?

Any codes?

Timing being off could cause white smoke.

Ticking noise could be loose converter bolts or a clutch problem. Also have you inspected the harmonic balancer and serpentine belt crank pulley for rubber failure?

I don´t know if this matters or not, but the vacuum pump went out and I changed it but the used one I got was not the right one and didn´t have turbo so the extra line that connects to the turbo was disconnected for the last year and a half. The problem really started the day after I replaced the vacuum pump with the right one and hooked up the line that goes to the turbo again.

You might have blown the head gasket dam between two adjoining cylinders,it also causes tons of white fuel laden smoke and a dull ticking/popping sound.
I suggest a compression test first,..it would show no or little compresion in both affected cylinders.

Adding boost to an allready existing situation makes it more prominent.

The IP is not the problem
