fuel additives

Ive been using PowerService/Diesel Kleen in the gray bottles and it seems to be doing the job, to be honest with everyone I think they all do the job their designed to do and being an over the road driver in my later years I can tell you the most important thing about diesel fuel is to stop the dirt and moisture from reaching your injectors and to make sure what ever additive you use doesn't have any Alcohol in it whats so ever because it will destroy your rubber seals. I'm also a firm believer in adding a second fuel filter and it should be the first thing on your list before you think about adding anything else to your diesel powered truck what ever the brand, I made my own setup for less then $100.00 and use the large CAT filter and its doing the job.

Stanadyne or the stuff from the John Deere Implement dealer, I thinks it's the same thing? It used to say Stanadyne on the bottle but doesn't anymore.
 
Last August through this spring I ran Optilube XPD with a boost of Amsoil Cold Flow Improver during the coldest months (kept me from gelling while ice fishing at -30F). I'm running Optilube Summer Formula now as it's a lot less expensive that the XPD formula.
 
Im sure the John Deere stuff is the same only John Deere bought out the rights to call it their own kind of like CNH bought out the rights to use Cummins engines an call them their own on all but the QSX.
 
I have been ussing Stanadyne performance formula for about 2 years. I don't know how much it is helping, but it makes me feel like it has to help some.
 
I use Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate (ADF) year round and Cold Flow Improver in the winter. I bet you probably could have guessed that I used Amsoil, huh. :eyebrows:
 
ok so the diesel concentrate says it improves fuel economy up to 5% is that only with really dirty injectors? if my injectors are clean so to speak will I not see any improvement in milage? I didnt see anything about a cetane improver. since they have a specific cetane improver. not sure what would be a better possible choice. what would be closest to the stanadyne performance formula?

If you have perfectly clean injectors, you may not see a big mileage gain. I've never had a customer with a brand new truck start out using the concentrate. I had 9k miles on mine when I started and I did see a less than 5% gain, I don't remember exactly how much.

Diesel Concentrate will demulsify water, clean and keep your fuel system clean, reduce the soot introduced into the crankcase oil (maintaining the TBN in the engine oil) and most importantly lubricate fuel pump and injectors. Amsoil Diesel Concentrate lubricated better than Stanadyne Performance by a pretty fair margin in a test done by another site (148 micron improvement for Amsoil vs. 33 micron improvement for Stan Perf).

Cetane boost is a performance enhancing additive that can raise fuel mileage by 2%. Stanadyne advertises that their formula raises cetane number from 49.9 to 52.7. To raise Cetane 3 points Amsoil Cetane Boost requires only 1 oz per 10 gallons of fuel, and 1oz per 5 gal of fuel to raise Cetane number by 7 points.

Combining Diesel Concentrate and Cetane Boost will give better lubricity and maximum Cetane number.

yup. thats what I was looking for. so basically as advertising goes. the stanadyne power formula says its a lubricator, a cetane booster and antigel. kind of like pennicillin. it covers alot of issues and works ok. where as to use amoil products, each one is specific for certain things.like viagra is good for limp noodle syndrome and zyrtec covers allergy symptoms they are good for what they are designed to fix.
 
I have been using Stanadyne Performance Formula in every tank-full since the day I picked up my truck from the dealer with 10 miles on the odometer. I've also been using Stanadyne Lubricity Formula, since I started burning the mandatory ULSD fuel. Read more HERE.

I buy them mail order by the case.

I realize that my usage may be a little overkill, but I do it mainly as an insurance policy to cover me in the those instances when the fuel at the pump might not be up to par.

Stanadyne fuel additives do NOT contain any alcohol or water emulsifiers and have been approved by GM.

I have never had to plug in my block heater and I have never had any problems starting my truck, even when it's been sitting outside overnight at -10ºF.
 
its a tough call. in order to get what stanadyne says is in the bottle i'd have to add 3 amsoil products. of course the cold flow improver wouldnt be required this time of year but to get the cetane boost and lubricity i'd have to get 2 amsoil products. then again. I may get similar results just using the concentrate. is there any lubricating propertys with the cetane booster? I didnt see it in the article maybe I missed it if its in there.
 
i'll have to ponder this. as much as I like the amsoil oils i'm not sure the fuel additives are for me. I appreciate all your answers. thank you
