This is a mod I do on every 88-94 I own. First did it in 93 on my 93 ECLB.
Most everyone knows what it is, but just to explane: Flash to Pass (FTP) is a function that allows the high beams to come on anytime the turn signal stalk is slightly pulled back (not all the way as in clicking to high or low beam) headlights do not need to be turned on either.
This is good for warning on coming traffic of whatever, cops, danger.....ect. Also, as the name implies you can flash slower traffic ahead to move right so you can pass.
(That is a huge pet peive of mine. Slow drivers stay RIGHT!!)
The lower dash cover is all busted up so it was a good time to R&R it too. I got a used one from our resident salvage man (Barry)

Compairing the old busted panel to the "new" one. It was grey, just wiped it down with laquer thiner then couple coats of adhesion promoter and couple coats of red.

Start the FTP mod by removing lower panel.

Next remove the four 10mm bolts holding column to fire wall. This will allow the column to relax far enough to rest the steering wheel on the seat in the next step. I used a 10mm on a cordless drill. Zipped them right out. Other wise it seems like you are there all day.
Flass to Pass 002.jpg

Remove the two 15mm nuts at the bracket holding column to dash. The column can fall at this point so be ready to catch it on something other than your head. Also if auto trans remove the little shift indcator cable. It attached with a little clip on the edge of the column.
Flass to Pass 003.jpg

Lowering the column give you access the the dimmer switch. It is slightly more toward driver side. The ingition switch is also right there and shares some of the mounting points. Try not to disturb the ajustment of the ingition switch.
There will be a 10mm nut on a stud and a 8mm screw that needs to be removed. Bring the dimmer switch down so you can access the connector and unplug it.

Compairing old (on right) and new (left) The new has an extra terminal. It needs to be supplied 12V. I like to tap a source thats hot with key off.
Note: Do not remove yet. The new switch has a metal "bar thingy" installed at factory. In the pic Its just above the pins/spades on the switch. Its there for shipping.

This is the power wire I made up. Its just a female packard on each end.
Flass to Pass 008.jpg

Plug power wire into the empty cavity on the stock connector. If you use the proper packard connector it will snap in just like factory.
Also you will need to depin the high beam and low beam wires from the connector. Just put the high beam wires where the low beam wire was and visa-versa. The high beam has the two green wires. low was a single brown. When done it should look like this picture. This was after the repin.

Another view. Plug other end into whatever 12V power source you chose (it needs to be fuse protected.
After that install the new switch (do not remove the bar thingy yet). once installed remove the metal bar thingy.

I did not have a buddy to to help so had to keep looking at the reflection.
This is headlights only.

Flass to Pass 014.jpg

This is with FTP activated. Notice all four headlights are on. You don't get that with the stock dimmer switch.
With the headlights off, just the High beam comes on.

All in all it took me about 45 minutes to do, but I have all the tools and connectors at my call. Afterall I do build cables for a living.

NICE! My time behind the wheel of a truck(real truck, not pickup truck) has left me wanting a fix like this. I'm glad you shared the info. What's the application for that 'replacement switch'. Just in case I can't cross that number locally.

I don't remember now exactly what year, but it was like a 85-93 Cadilac with FTP

Interesting info. I personally never use flash to pass, as my 88 and 99 don't have it. The 02 has it but I've never found it useful.

I use mine all the time. Warning oncoming traffic if a cop is taking radar. Or if at night I need to see something real quick. As all four lights stay on you get alot of light. Sometimes I think I see a bicyclist or pedestrian and need to see further up the road, its great for that.
I have to have it on all my vehicles.

Yes it can be done on the 95&^ trucks. I have it in my 96 now, perfectly factory no additional wiring was even needed (I think). The risk is you could distroy a MFS getting the new part into it.
I was going to offer them converted to FTP but did not want the risk/hassle of braking them.
Basicaly if you can get to the high beam/low beam "slide switch" inside the MFS you just replace it with one from a FTP vehicle.
Junk yard is full of them alot of cars used the same part too.

My brother has one loose, I'll try to get a picture of it.

Edit: The above refers to the 95-2000 GMT400 style MFS

Thanks, Leroy, great mod, good pics! I love show-and-tell!

I'm going to put this into the 6.5 Tech Library, if ya don't mind!

Jim

Sorry for digging this up but I found it while trying to find a pinout for the dimmer switch. I plan on converting to a floor mounted push button switch like the old trucks. So the high beam is the one with 2 green wires and the single brown is low? The reason im converting is twofold, the internal linkage for the dimmer switch in my column is damaged. Plus thr push button is more durable and easier to locate via foot instead of moving the lever in off road situations.

The high beam has the two green wires. low was a single brown. I don't think you will have FTP with a floor switch though.

I have thought about a floor switch, but for other reasons, like a/c cut off/on or anything else you might need to turn off/on alot, but are to lazy to reach up to the dash.

i have a floor switch but it's for the Gearvendor unit. i cut/bent a piece of aluminum sheet to fit around floor contour, mounted the switch to that, cut a round hole in the carpet. i didn't want to drill holes in the floor because of rust potential.

Leroy, I'm VERY interested in FTP for my '98 Burb. It's getting close to fall rutting season and after hitting a buck White Tail three years ago with my Camry and surviving by sheer luck or grace of G-d, having FTP would be damn handy for checking that green double reflection just at the edge of my low beams, or for that idiot that insists on driving 73 mph in the passing lane.

Pics of conversion/kit?

I don't have a kit for the 95& up.
Go to a junk yard and pull the FTP from almost any same year vintage GM car or truck and swap it in. You do run the risk of destroying you MFS, so maybe do the swap in the junk yard then when you have one built take it up and pay for it?

Leroy:

Got any pictures or video you can post of doing the conversion of the 95-up? Any 95 up GM that has a Multi Function Stalk that has FTP like out of a Caddy, Buick, Olds, etc will work as a donor to convert over the pickup MFS? Does the FTP work when the headlight switch is off and the DRL's (low beams) are on to flash the high beams? I'm usually pretty good with that taking it apart and putting it back together stuff, but a picture or drawing or two is sure better than breaking a couple (or so) to figure out how it's supposed to come apart. I do like the idea of doing the conversion from a donor vehicle's MFS to a 95+ pickup MFS at the parts yard. There are a couple of pull it yourself yards up in Omaha where I could easily find a donor vehicle for each, then take the completed conversion up to the yard house to check out and pay for it. I might even be able to find one with the printing not worn off like mine is!
