Frame Rust...

POR won't work with anything resembling loose rust from my experience and is kinda iffy with surface rust too.

I dunno, their Metal Ready that I Sprayed On def. took off come Rust in the 1 Spot, Leaving Bare Shiny Metal Behind.

But it was prob. an 8 Year Old Bottle, so I'm sure it prob. Lost some Strength, and it was $15.99, now, it's prob. around $20 or more for the same thing.

K, so I had the Idea of Hitting the Frame with my Power Washer to see if that would do anything. It's no Slouch, it's a 3300psi Rigid, with a Subaru Engine, so it's got some Balls. :)

Just got done doing the Driver Side and I'm Glad to say it did a pretty Good Job. I Used the 0* Needle Jet. I Blasted right through the Rubbery Waxy Coating like nothing. I'm down to Bare Metal in alot of Spots, and it Blasted the Rust Spots down to just a Stain. When I got done, it looks like it is all just REALLY Bad Surface Rust. I'm gonna get a better Look at it Tomorrow after it Dries Tonight.

After Looking at the Job that the Power Washer did, I don't Think a Needle Scaler would do much Good. The Coating isn't Dry enough, and I think all the Scaler would do is Dimple the Coating, rather than Remove it.

I Think the Best Options are to keep Power Washing it with the Needle Jet or get a Blaster.

I'm def. gonna get some Coating on it ASAP though. Just gotta figure out how to get Underneath and Inside of the Frame. I Think I'm gonna have to go at it from Opposite Sides. Do the Pass Side from the Driver Side, then the Diver Side from the Pass Side.

Now my Driveway is Covered in Strips and Pieces of the Frame Coating. :)

If the pressure washer didn't move it its not likely to flake off later. Some conditions where you have heavy scale a follow up with the needle scale-er might be needed, fortunately for you, you didn't need that. You could soak a sponge with the phosphoric acid stuff and pull it through the frame.

If the kids ask what your doing tell them you are water boarding Sponge Bob SquarePants. :rof: I crack me up!

Oh, the Needle Jet got all the Flaky stuff Off with no Problem. I was getting Hit in the Face with all kinds of Crap. There's def. no more Flaky Rust anywhere on the Driver Side of the Frame.

I might even get Creative with my Creeper Tomorrow and Wheel my Ass around Under the Truck while Blasting. :)

Gotta Decide if I wanna Use Rustoleum on the Frame, this New Paint by Valspar that my Local Speed Shop now Carries for Rust, or the Duplicolor Bed Armor with Kevlar.

Here's how it Looks now:

You are talking about one of those Rotox nozzles I think. Got one, its a time saver with that spinning stream. If you get one match it to your your gpm and psi output.
How about using POR15 instead of Rustoleum?

Yikes James. I was wondering what a frame off spray coating with something like Rhinoliner or Linex would look like? I wish mine came from the factory with something like that. Then we wouldn't have this issue to deal with. Or even a galvanized steel frame would be better than what we have.

I got ALOT of POR15 Left over from when I Used to Paint my 'Ski Trailers.

I've been Thinking about Using the rest of it up on the Truck.

But I've seen alot of People say that it's nothing but some REALLY Good Floor Paint now...

POR15 is really good paint, with a rust converter added. I have one car that is painted in the floor inside and out with it. You can paint it on and wipe it off with a solvent wet rag in a few minutes and see where its started turning the rust film black oxide.

You got leftovers? Get busy with it :hihi:

It would be Nice if they made it in a Spray by now. It's def. been out Long Enough. They just came out with a Rubberized Undercoating though.

I stripped the whole frame on my 03 and I had the entire box off. Which really helped a lot, and wasnt a terrible lot of work if you got somebody to help you lift it off. You can get so much more access to the frame and made painting and cleaning much easier. I did it all with a angle grinder with a wire brush. It was a huge huge huge PITA, I wish I had thought about the power washer. That is sweet that it worked. I painted it with the brush on two part rustoleum rusty metal primer and it all worked good but stone chips started rusting less than a year after I did it. I would find something tougher. After I panted it I took old oil from oil changes and brushed it in every crack that seemed to rust bad and wasnt noticeable. I put it on the inside of the frame rails too. If you ever take old stuff apart that had leaked oil on a certain part of the frame, the frame always looks brand new there. I figured that might help with longevity. Then i sold it.

These frame rusting like that kinda sucks. I wish GM had come up with something a little more durable. My 09 is already starting to show signs of the surface rust.

Yea, it's just the Coating that Sucks.

If they Used something that actually DRIED, it would be Good & Effective.

So how's this for Progress?!

I got an Idea to Try Brakleen to get the rest of the Crap Coating Off, because I think we all know how Good it's Cutting Power is with Grime.

So I Ordered a Case of it and here's the Results.

Before:

After Hitting with Brakleen :)

Then Coated with POR15:

...now to do the rest of the Frame...

And you're still breathing?
Where is the runoff going? Gotta be some nasty stuff...

Haha, yep, I'm still here. We had some Good Wind Today, so Breathing around this stuff wasn't even Noticeable.

I got that Absorbing Sand stuff like Kitty Litter that they Use at Car Accidents when the Fluids Spill on the Road. But yea, the stuff Dripping Off the Frame from the Brakleen Looks like Black Coffee, and if you get any of it on you, it's not coming Off til it's Ready.
