Anyone know anything about the 400ci motor?

I plan on looking at a 79 F250 with a 400ci, 4spd, 4wd this afternoon. I was led to believe that the 400 is bastard motor (from a ford fan) - didn't know if you guys had an opinion...

Oh, and supposedly has an RV cam in it to help with pulling (per the seller)

I once owned a ford F250 with a 400 engine. It run good and pulled a horse trailer good too.
An old timer ford mechanic said the 400 was a modified 351, I think He said they were bored to make the 400. IIRC

What was not to like about a 400 CI gas motor or a Diesel. Never had any experience with the Ford 400, can't help you there. Other than loving gas I would say it would be a good pulling engine unless it is wore out or has issues.

Pretty sure my f600 wheat truck has a 390 or 400 in it. It's really not terrible just sucks the truck is only a 4 speed with a 2 speed rear.

Someday I'm thinking a 5.9 and a 6 speed MD trans would be nice and keep the 2 speed rear.

So far how is it doing for you. Great to hear from you again.

It's running rough but it's not the motor's fault. Someone decided it was a good idea to put an edelbrock carb on it before changing out the plugs.

The seller gave me an HEI with new plug wires, as well as a block fuel pump and regulator - and body mounts. If I come across a stock or holly - i might switch to that, but we'll see.

And I know this is a chevy page - but I've always valued your opinions/experiences. It's always great to visit.

You guys know of any forums good for these old ford trucks? Maybe or maybe not for specifically 70's models since I do have an 88 bronco that I plan on keeping for a while..

You might try powerstrokenation. com, I think they have a discussion area about gas engine Ford trucks.

I am not a member of that forum of course, I just stumbled across it one day. No I am not about ready to jump ship to a power stroke guys....:)
