Flywheel & convertor cover

I was just curious if and or how important would it be to use or not to use the cover that is placed to cover the flywheel on an automatic tranny? My concerns are the crossover tube creating enough heat to raise the transmission temperature. I'd like to run my truck for a little bit to see what is causing it to lock up now and then.

Keep it off dirt roads and avoid road debris like tire caps etc. Imagine what a larger rock or piece of tire rubber would do wedged between the engine and flywheel or converter and trans. Other than that risk you are fine.

They are also used for support. Not real common but bell housings have broken because of the distance from engine to transfer case mount is so far. So they went away from the tin one that is on 2wd to the thicker aluminum one for 4wd. And I'm just not sure if the extra vibration and torque of the diesel would cause it to happen sooner than on a gasser.

Thanks everyone, I will put in back on in the near future. I really just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't have any problems with the tranny running hot but it seems I'll be fine for some time.
