Flakey 6.5

could it be fuel starvation ?

Doing your check list You wrote:

Explain your problem in concise language (ie: Cranks but won’t fire). _Stalls and hesitation when pushing on accel pedal____________________

4b] Does it stall under particular circumstances? (ie hit bump, or on accel) __No____

so

I just changed the fuel filter, boy there was some nasty gunk in there. More like doing a oil change than fuel filter. Got it all cleaned out with some help from my Snap-on extra long needle nose pliers.

But I think I found a problem.....lift pump (is it the one on the side rails?)
I filled the filter canister up half way with some diesel kleen and cycled the key about five times. It fired up and ran about 2 minutes then died.

Fuel is gone out of the filter canister and I can't hear or feel the lift pump doing anything.

While it is idling you should be able to crack that bleeder screw to let the air out and the vehicle should not die.

IF it dies, and you in fact have no fuel pressure, you are working your very expensive Injection PUmp overtime hard to try to suck the fuel in. That would explain why your pedal feels like issue. IP is working really hard to pull fuel from tank.

Alot of gunk can kill your lift pump btw, make sure that bad boy is working or you are taking life off your very expensive injection pump.

FWIW, it seems the accelerator pedals rarely fail on these, and there are 3 sensors that will continue to work after the other 2 die out. It also throws a code telling you, even a dummy light is there.

Your issue more than likely is fuel starvation, not your pedal.

If you still don't have adequate fuel flow after lift pump change check your pickup sock. With the crud you pulled from the FM your sock could be plugged which would in turn shorten LP life.

New pump is in, I did the cross the wire trick on the relay and no dice.
I cracked the "T" valve and nothing. The pump isn't showing any signs that its pumping. If I hold my hand on the relay for the fuel pump I can feel it click.
Checking to see if I am getting voltage back to the pump now.

simple thing : did you check your fuse ?
You rig being a 1996, look at the harness between the fuse box underhood and the firewall. You should find a plug on a red wire.
Power this plug with 12volts source, your lift pump should start. If it doesn't, it is not getting power...

Found the problem, yea I checked the fuse.
Using a test light, no power back to the pump with the jumper wire on the relay.
Noticed the wires didn't look factory and traced them back up along the frame and then through the firewall to the fuse panel on the dash. Whoever owned the truck before me must have wired it up and they had a tap with a fuse holder and no fuse. I put in a 15amp fuse and bingo, I hear this vibrating noise and see fuel pissing out of the T hose.
I let it build some pressure and then tried to start, a little stumble and she comes to life.
Took it for a short shakedown run, got on it enough to hit 8lbs of boost and no lag or accelerator issues. I think problem solved.
I am wondering why there was no fuse though, the pump stops when I shut off the truck.

A big thanks to everyone here for the help.

BTW This post was a big help after doing a search for "Lift Pump"

There is a mess of wires in that area, a lot not factory too.
I will check the wire you talking about tomorrow, but somebody might have by passed it.

Well, so be careful, don't power the wrong plug.
I will post you a pic.

This plug is very useful when you are working alone and you have to bleed your system after fuel filter change

Took the 6.5 to work this morning and I swear it feels like I can do 70mph easier. I guess a valid point would be if the IP was doing all the fuel pumping, it could have been starving all the time.
