Fishing trip not without issues...

right now just because the spring holds it a little more closed that the vacuum at cruise. But you can always leave it hanging there or in the truck in case you need to hook it up. With a boost gauge or you notice a lot of black smoke youll know when you have an issue.

In my experience, there is very often a big difference between a true TM and a home-built version. The factors controlling the function of the TM are:

- length of the wastegate arm
- spring pitch
- spring tension
- spring length

I've seen a lot of home-built versions, and none of them look like my Heath TM does. Heath's version has precisely engineered all of those 4 factors to produce a boost application that is both predictable and consistent... I don't disagree that the home-made versions will work, (even a screen-door spring will work) but they aren't the same thing. Bill Heath's TurboMaster was designed and built over a couple of years and thousands of miles of real-world testing.

Comparing a vacuum WG control system versus a TM simply based on an analysis of a home-made TM is misleading and inaccurate.

However, this experience has brought forth a great idea for the 6.5 emergency toolkit... keeping a screen-door spring all coiled-up in a baggie in case your Vac pump, lines, solenoids, or fuses, take a dump on the road will help get ya home! I think if I was towing with a vacuum system, I would most definitely carry one. Crankme, can you post some specs on that spring (length, tension, etc)?

Comparing a TM to the stock vacuum boost curve is also very inaccurate. But I have a spring that works exactly like I want my boost, so it is the PERFECT TM for me, and it does not match the performance that the vacuum system did. So my analysis is that no other spring could be better, since I have exactly what I want for boost when I put my foot in the pedal and take my foot out of the pedal. Ive tried 5 different springs to get there.

I was thinking the same thing ;)

I also carry a roll of lockwire in my kit. Seems to me a simple little loop and twist would lock the wastegate shut and then simply drive the boost gauge....

Sure will

I can measure the length and possibly the diameter but in reality I just popped it on there as I thought it would be a tad better then just wiriing the wastegate shut...and it certainly was all of that. I really don't have much other real data for the spring other then it was for a screen door. I'll take a few pics tonight, if I can find my camera & post up what I can.

Hell, next time i just wire the stupid thing shut.If an ATT runs without, why can't the GM turbo's.

I got a TM(home made of course)set at 15 lbs but i drive according to the EGT's anyway.
