First VW, now Cummins

Excellent questions!

In any event, it was apparently worth it to Cummins to pay $1.7 Billion for ending the US Federal piece.

Now comes the follow-on question of what recalls are in the works and how much that is going to cost. If it is just software, will not cost all that much in terms of the bottom line. But if it requires new hardware and paying for labor, along with facing a Class Action suit...

Is it wrong to wish he gets coal in his stocking?
 
My son, 2019 Dodge Lamb, oooops, RAM. Cummins.
He has got the delete kits and 5” exhaust for it.
Tomorrow is our appointed time to begin that process.
He also has the tune for the equipment loaded into the ECM but not yet activated it.
I sent him a text early last week about this and asked if he still wants to proceed with this program.
He said he is doing it. Screw EPA.

There are actually some defeats and mods that I am looking forward to doing. Here is an example:


In the Aussie example, should not prove much challenge on retrofitting into any pickup that uses glow plugs. Yank the glow plugs, replace them with injectors, and find a way to briefly heat the intake air until the engine is warm enough to support the diesel's ignition like Cummins does.

Only possible problems with this path are that, currently, generation is a challenge. And am not clear on the effects of hydrogen turning the metal brittle. For the supply concern, the demand side is starting to ramp-up and am confident that supply is soon to follow. For the embrittlement, am seeing where its effects reduce in high temperature situations, so time will tell whether this is a factor for the engine.

In the end, going this route might not fully get diesel out of harms way, but it should buy a lot of time. Especially if it turns out that the all-in carbon footprint of the "green" alternatives are higher than ICE running with fuel blends.

"Vulnerable Communities" are typically near transportation corridors. There I fixed it for them.
