Well, after owning the old girl for about a year, I towed with it this past weekend. It was my in-laws 24' pontoon boat. This is the first pontoon that I have ever towed, and basically its like pulling a 2500 lb parachute. I had a 20-30 mph constant crosswind. And coming home yesterday, it was about 91 degrees out.

Off the line, it did better than I expected, until about the 45-55mph range. Thats where she started to struggle. Trying to maintain 55 was not a realistic goal for it. It wanted to over heat. It got to 210 degrees pretty quickly trying to maintain 55. So I backed off to around the 47-50mph range depending on wind at the time. And it would cool back off. So thats the range that I stayed with. With those speeds the EGT's where constant at 850 degrees.

So having all that said. I am going to take care of the routine radiator cleansing, taking it all the way out. And I am going to start looking for a dual thermostat housing.

But my question is this: What H.O. output water pump should I look for?

Should I look for a waterpump for a newer application such as '96 and newer?

Or I have read about a Hummer H.O. water pump somewhere I think. My fan clutch was working, I could hear it when it locked in. Sounded like it was pushing more air when it locked in. But I may look into a Heavy Duty fan clutch. It was just a hot day with a lot of wind mixed in. So conditions could have been better for me.

My goal is to eventually pull a 26' or smaller camper with it. So I want to get it pull ready.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give and idea of what i'm working with so far. Thanks Jack

At what temperature did clutch engage at? My oldie was engaging around 230df, and my OEM replacement at 210df consistantly. Big difference as 230 is unacceptable.

at 230 your going to break/crack expensive parts like the heads or even the block. 230 is out of the safe zone for heat. i've hauled 4K in steel and my truck never moved above the normal range. i do have the HO waterpump and dual thermostat housing however, so thats probably why i got those results.

I need to tow a vehicle this weekend (approx. 6000 lbs w/trailer). I plan on running AC, as I will be in my Sunday best for church. I don't have any guages, although I do have a Scanguage and I can read my coolant temp to the nearest degree.

At what temp do I need to back off the throttle, 210? I plan on running 60-65 mph.

I have never towed anything this heavy before. Just looking for some advice.

Thanks,
Todd

i'd back off at 210 if not before. if the temp starts to go up at all i'd back off.

Matt-The clutch engaged around 210. It crept up above 210 once, and i backed out of it quickly.

Thanks for the heads up on the single stat housing TD.

Hey Dave, is the H.O. pump you have for your year of truck? or was it for another year that worked on yours?
