Finally starting my own ATT swap

Looking Great!

Wanted to nail-down a Peninsular intake modification that opens up to 3" at the turbo but am not talented enough to fab connections for the OBDII stuff; also other money pits (fixing a tub's stall, failed roof shingles, etc) got in the way.

Oh, and I thought it was common knowledge that day-glow red-ish easily added 10hp and 50 foot pounds . . . :D

If it is not too late, an old boaters trick to stave off the skeeters is a few drops of 100% DEET. Sure the stuff stinks and the Missus will not want to get near you, but more important is that the biting ones will not either :agreed:

And glad to see that I am not the only one who added back the 'filter minder' by drilling a hole in the silicon intake and stuffing it through

Seeing as your intake is closer to mine (minus the ram-air effect), interested to know what the drone is like with the ATT. It was down right unpleasant in the Burb until I pulled the AFE off and put in a K47 with silicon hoses to the ATT; much better now, but still far from perfect.

Some parts I need just popped up on Craigslist, I have to go to other side of Houston for, so I may have to finish this ATT project up tomorrow.
I thought about using my Peninscular upper to, but then I'd have a longer run of pipe and multipul silicone. I wanted to keep it simple (not that making the adaptor was simple) for the long run.

I once knew a guy whose wooden ( ) spacer was replaced with - of all things - PURPLE!
j/k :hihi:

:haha: Still gnawing away at that old bone are we? :cheers2:

HIJACK ALERT Here's what the wood and purple stuff is about for those wandering :???: or those who remember the saga of that project.

Hang in there Mike, Sunshine may sell his Burb so, if he does, that natural unit he has is coming back and guess what.... :nana:

Sorry for the hijack. The long story is here. It took Four Months to get this to final as I'm not a machinist and there were other delays. Now the milling machine is toast so 'That's all Folks.'

Oh, and in getting us all back to the thread's topic... I like Leroy's concept much better.

We now return to anticipated results from Leroy's installation and innovation.:reporter:

Damn, the anticipation for the results is killing me. Feel like a turbo boo about ready to pop off.

What size are the silicone couplings that come with the ATT kit? Those blue ones are swelling up and look like they are gonna blow off. I tightened the t clamps, but they are gonna slip off.

Nice pic's Paul. With any luck I'll be able to finish up today. Yesterday got shot to hell. I'll try to get a vid. My old camea is having problems, but I got a new one and need to figue it out first.

Hang in there!!

Do you have the files for that? I have friends with milling machines, could get a quote to make some.

Awesome idea, mine was more crude, a box welded together with a piece of 90 deg pipe welded on.

Awesome idea... my hats off on the every-bodies fab work and time. I feel certain the spacer would sell, especially for ATT users. Might work for other turbos as well...

BTW love the purple!

To tell you the truth, the spacer was a waste of time as drilling and taping the lower intake would have served just as well and saved several months of time.

I just didn't want to swiss cheese the lower or the Peninsular upper for the OEM sensors and aftermarket gauge sensors. You know, in case I chose to go back to the OEM set up (as I've done a couple of times). I have 635's lower intake that was tapped in about 6-8 places along with the upper intake tapped in 4. The taps went deep so sealing them against 20+ PSI has proven problematic, even with the sensors installed and spacer removed. Mores the pity too cause it is extrude honed, smooth inside. Maybe I will farm it out and have the holes filled to stop the hemorrhaging. In the mean time, I 'm back to my old lower.

As to the milling codes, I've asked already and have been told no.:nonod:

Leroy, that's a re-kindled thought if you decide to market that spacer; it makes a good place to tap in for gauges, WMI, Propane or, for the adventurous, NOX. Rather than drill out the upper or lower OEM intakes. Kinda like a power strip.

Well I just got home, been one of those unexpected long days. For sure I will get the burb wraped up tomorrow and report back.
It is my hope to make these adapter manifolds for ATT users. I have an aftermarket IAT gauge I was planing to use, but I was designed it to use one of the hole in manifolds to insert the probe (kind of like my Turbo Boost Bolt).
I could easily tap some threads on the adaptor. What do you think 1/4" and 1/8" ports?

I was thinking the same, actually I was thinking 1/2" ports then bush them down. Any reason to go 1/2" though? 1/4" probably makes most since.
Im headed out to finish the Burb up in a few.

Agree with sctrailrider on the 1/4" NPT. Maybe one hole at 1/4 with the 1/8 NPT adaptor bush installed and a couple more at 1/8 NPT holes with plugs for all (no gauges or for those working up to them). As I'm running the same family of gauges, they are all 1/8" so I'm unfamiliar with other brands that run 1/4" I know 635 had one tap at 8mm 1pitch. That was a joy to find a plug for.

Man what a day! It was long, but good.

I picked up an engine for another project Im doing. Then got back here to finish up the Burb and what a nightmare it turned out to be.
As I said I got the pass side done with new injectors, GPs and the ATT. Waited to today to fire it up before doing driver side, that way the engine starts much easier with 4 primed and ready injectors on driver side.
Well I had fuel pouring onto the ground and could not see where it was coming from because Murphys law said "the leak will be behind the turbo and behind the heat shield". SO, I pull the turbo back off and my dumb ass forgot to tighten the hard line connections on 2nd and 3 injectors. Got those tight and thought I would be smart this time and start the engine with the turbo off just so I can see if anymore leaks present. Cleaned the area of all tools...ect "fired up the willing engine responding with a roar" (sorry big Rush fan) anyway fired it up and it stumbled so Im sitting there reving it up trying to clear it up. I walked out to front and see oil gushing from somewhere. I did not take time to find out where from but ran back and shut off the engine. Turns out it was my dumb ass again. It was the turbo oil feed. I forgot to plug it. I even have a special fitting I use for only that job and I forgot it!! Talk about pissed. Oil eveywhere, I had the turbo off so the oil was hitting the exhaust and spraying all over. That sucked!!
Anyway it will clean up and I have more rust protection:hihi:
After all that $hit I got the driver side done, turbo back on and took it for a drive. All I can say is WOW!! its hard to decribe. The Burb will actually move pretty damn good now. I can actually hear this turbo's whine more than the GMturbo.
This is without a tune. No smoke that I noticed (except for the smoke burning off the exhaust manifold).
All in all the ATT turbo is actually easier to R&R and will probably take most about an hour and a half to install one. If I can produce the manifold adaptor it will cut it down to one hour. (this assumes your not working on a rusted turbo....ect).

I would recomend if you are installing new injectors to fire the engine with turbo off and OIL LINE PLUGED :mad5:
to inspect for leaks.

I did the exact same thing on my 95, left the center 2 injector lines loose after reinstalling the turbo, had to pull the turbo again and thought I'll out smart it by starting with turbo off, oil bath followed. I learned to stick mine in the fill hole.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that has those issues.

Waiting for the video.

Hey, at least you didn't suck a rag through the intake. Could have been worse.

All the little brain-farts though... :D

In the end, Ya got 'er done, and that's how we keep score around here!
