Extending the glow plug time

I am a new member here, some of you may know me from Dieselplace but I replaced my glow plugs and overrided the cold advanced timing/high idle to a 12v source (my switch is bad and don't feel like paying money to replace it) so I am hoping those two ingredients will help my cold starts. I was having a VERY difficult time starting up in 40 degree temps. I replaced 4 of the glow plugs so far with AcDelco 60g GPs (will replace the others when I head to my folks place in a week) and I will not be able to plug in my truck this winter so I was wondering if anybody has advice on extending my glow plug cycle through a switch of some sort. Thanks for the help.

Hi Farmboy... welcome to DTR!

If you want to extend your glowplug time, you can install the Glowplug Relay Mod, found in the 6.5 Technical Reference Library, under G for 'GlowPlug Over-ride'.

There's a complete description of it (including pictures) - it's cheap, easy, and very effective.

I moved this thread to the regular 6.5 forum for you... the 6.5 Performance section is for performance modifications and discussions around new performance ideas, sort of a 'cutting edge' bullpen.

For what it's worth, I used to live in Eagan, MN and traveled quite a bit. Need less to say, I would come home to a very cold truck as it sat out in the airport parking for up to 5 days without being plugged in. Long story short is this thing wouldn't have any problems firing off. Mind you I had brand new 1000CCA batteries, good glow plugs and ran 5w/40 synthetic. There were times that I would fly in to below zero weather and she would get me home every time.

Glow plug override is more important once you go to 60G's, they require more time to heat up. The rule of thumb is however many seconds the ECM gives you needs to be doubled. So if the light stays on for 5 seconds use the override and give it another 5.

I have the 60g's in my 92 and have no starting problems in very cold temps. If everything else is good the extended glow time isn't needed. Big battery cables make a huge difference. I have custom made 1/0 cables.

Well I got 4 of them replaced and the truck is starting up SOOO much better in 30 degree temps. Click and start compared to 15sec of cranking (no lie). I must have had some VERY weak glow plugs. I am guna install the other four soon and hook my high idle and advanced timing on a switch also. Truck smokes like a freight train for 10sec or so when started but atleast I won't burn up my starter. I think the smoke is from my HO injectors and having the pump cranked up, friend of mine said that will happen along with high mileage.
