EGT are too high! Why?

thats great thank you. its hard to understand why GM would do what they did to the down pipe if a 3" would fit.

I have looked around and seems to me the best deal i can find is at summitracing.com with the flowmaster 3" down pipe and the 2 1/4 crossover for $115 I think that is the way i am going to go.

When you look at the original downpipe, you'll see that it is probably easier to install, has all the crimps in places where it might have fitment issues. The larger constant-radius downpipes have less clearance, and you need to make sure it doesn't rub or hit or vibrate.

GM was interested in getting these built quickly and inexpensively, is my opinion.

i did check the vac system, air filter is new no intake leaks. coolant temp is 180-190. i hooked the waste gate direct to the vac pump and under wot i get 12 to 14 psi so i know the turbo works fine

I'm sure the soot trap is restricted it has 225k on it. and now seeing the air snokle and the cross over and down pipe no wonder the things cant breath.

i also know it needs a new IP. It fails Heath's 2000 rpm test. Would that make high egt's?

I ran 1100 with a full open 4 inch. Not that unsual but I also had 12-13 psi Boost. If you have a soot trap(aka Cat, another Kitty) a catectomy is in order. If your state allows I would lose it and lose it fast. If they don't well......
Disclaimer:Modifying or tampering with emssions devices are violation of both federal, state and local laws and may be punishable by fine or imprisonment and Al Gore will personally (fill in the blank) you....:D
That said...(OJ Quote)I did not murder my kitty but if I did here's how I would have done it.....
Take kitty off. Using Mr. Whizzer cut a nice even square along the welded seams and remove the square. Make sure you do this on the side that will face up . Take hammer and chisel and proceed to smash out all that pure ugliness in there. Get it all out even the insulation. Then Carefully weld the square back in. Voila...You have perfomed your first catectomy and you didn't even grad from Med school(well maybe you did).
5psi boost with stock vac system I "think" was about right. Most of us running turbomasters(a really nice upgrade that can be had cheap) run 12-14. A few daring soles run more.

Don't hollow out a cat, it will cause you to lose power, the now open chamber makes the exhaust gas's do weird things, If you want to fool inspectors, weld on some cat heat shields, that's what I do, ):h

A tuner mag, I know, lol, tested a car with a cat, cat hollowed out and straight pipe, hollowed out cat had the most hp loss, :mad2:

Cost and packaging, if 1 in a 1000 hits, then thats unacceptable so they go the safe route.

Yep, Flowmaster kit is a good one.

Have you tried Heath Diesel or other vendors?

I bought two. Best deal out there and the quality is really good. 2 yrs later and the pipe still looked new. Some other brands didn't look so good. I showed Joey D what a flowmaster looked like cut open.

Weld the gutted "Soot trap" around the straight pipe in the correct location....I know a few guys who have done this......They look really good!

Where did you get that from ? My Tahoe ran like a raped ape. Show me proof. I did it twice with only improvement.

I have no idea where it went but its simple theory, you have air going in a straight line, then the chamber makes the air vortex and then eddy, hurting flow.

Yep, that's another idea, just shove a pipe in,

here in NH only 96 up get checked. so i'm cuttin it out. I am going with the flow master cross over and down pipe then off to the pipe bender for 3" pipe over the rear axle and out at the factory spot.

Do your self a favor and save your knuckles and alot of cursing. Toss the crossover bolts and replace with studs. You can get a kit from SS diesel or just go the the Help rack at any good auto parts store and match something up. Makes it waaayyy easier IMHO.

3" pipe is not big enough, you will have more efficiency and more power with larger pipe. If you get free 3" pipe work, maybe do dual pipe, like a muffler with one input and two outputs. or a Y and two cheap 3" mufflers like on ebay. 4" systems dont cost much though.

Of course Kenny had mysterious towing issues

and had them before. The only thing I will say that may made a difference in my case was when I had the 4 inch done he cut it into the trap. The guy who did the exhuast does nothing but custom high end exhaust work, Mark you know who I mean, Pop's on Slater, and he said it would be fine. it was a concern when I did it because I will admit I thought about that too. There were others both here and on the place that did the same thing. My mysteriuos toing issues were no mystery at all. Very simple, too small a truck pulling to big a load. It needed an IC. IATs were always through the roof cause I had that poor little gm4 workin way too hard. I probably coul have cut the boost back. Plus I sold the truck before i got to try the new fan Heath sent me. Me thinks the fan was not working properly. My 2000 had the same problem excatly with stock trap. I swapped the clutch alone with the hayden severe duty and it was night and day. It's a shame I never had a chance to swap that fan to the Tahoe...How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop????
The world may never know....):h
Picture worth 1000 words...

I'd like to add on the towing note that I have found weight alone is not the only thing to consider. You must consider wind resisitance. Campers have tons of it. My skidsteer and trailer weighed easily as much as the camper if not more and i had no problem towing it. It was only the camper. See my photo album. The 2000 had no problem towing that, hook the camper up and them temps climbed.
