I have my prob in the manifold just under the turbo. Pulling an empty car trailer on the highway at 65-70 i am seeing around 1000 and if i hit a even a small hill it will hit 1200 fast. I know to let off. but why is this happening? I just put the gauge in so i dont know how long this has been going on. I do notice that at idle my exahust stinks of diesel like it smells rich. I do get smoke under accel. and my boost is around 5psi :grouphug:

Welcome vegtech.

Boost is a little low....is that 5 PSI at hard accel or cruising?

Some other things to check:

Exhaust Temps, Start with the obvious......Assuming your exhaust is stock, Soot trap (cat) Clogged, Original crossover and down pipe are very restrictive.

After exhaust, Air intake, 96 and down had less than optimal air filter housing W/ a restrictive "snorkel" in the fender - needs to come out.

Then Air filter, turbo, that whole air intake path.

Check the Tech library in the stickey's - Top of the 6.5 forum page.

BTW, your in the right place........Welcome aboard!

Yes, welcome to the forum. One of the biggest problems on the old "S" (EGR-equipped) engines is that they have restrictive exhaust AND intake.

You need (as the guys say) to get rid of the stock downpipe and crossover, at the least, and either replace or remove the soot-trap (if your local law allows).

Snorkle needs to come out and you need to clear out the horrible restrictions in the upper intake manifold.

e.g.

pulling a moderate load usually averages around 800, but hills should gradually run temp up to about 1000 to 1100. what is engine coolant temp like?

I ran 1100 with a full open 4 inch. Not that unsual but I also had 12-13 psi Boost. If you have a soot trap(aka Cat, another Kitty) a catectomy is in order. If your state allows I would lose it and lose it fast. If they don't well......
Disclaimer:Modifying or tampering with emssions devices are violation of both federal, state and local laws and may be punishable by fine or imprisonment and Al Gore will personally (fill in the blank) you....:D
That said...(OJ Quote)I did not murder my kitty but if I did here's how I would have done it.....
Take kitty off. Using Mr. Whizzer cut a nice even square along the welded seams and remove the square. Make sure you do this on the side that will face up . Take hammer and chisel and proceed to smash out all that pure ugliness in there. Get it all out even the insulation. Then Carefully weld the square back in. Voila...You have perfomed your first catectomy and you didn't even grad from Med school(well maybe you did).
5psi boost with stock vac system I "think" was about right. Most of us running turbomasters(a really nice upgrade that can be had cheap) run 12-14. A few daring soles run more.

Rob, Thanks for the follow up pictorial......That should definatley help clarify.

thanks guys. i did hog out my upper intake when i had it off doing a head gaskets. i did just get an F upper and lower i intend to put on and gel Heath's GL4 with egr delete.

In doing the heads, do you have any intake leaks? Losing boost pressure may be a reason for higher EGT's too....

Until I took off my stock exhuast I never saw over 6psi.

Big problem with '93-'96 ... collapsed crossover (in the wrinkly corners) right from the factory. You can't even see it without cutting the pipe open or running a golf-ball through...

I hate double-wall pipe.

From Heath Diesel's website:

i thought i reed that you had to have a body lift to put on a 3" down pipe? I read many sigs that say 3" down pipe but say nothing about a lift. Do I or Do I not need a lift?

You can put on a 3" downpipe with or without a lift. My burb is not lifted, my Tahoe is. Both have 3" downpipes.

-Rob :)

thats great thank you. its hard to understand why GM would do what they did to the down pipe if a 3" would fit.

I have looked around and seems to me the best deal i can find is at summitracing.com with the flowmaster 3" down pipe and the 2 1/4 crossover for $115 I think that is the way i am going to go.

This thread has been all over the place with performance suggestions, I was wondering if you have done any diagnosis? Did you check the simple things yet?
