Duramax LBZ Predator Vs. PPE

I usually run my predator on the 85 setting. My mileage is up a little bit. I also gained a little bit by switching to synthetic oil. I have never limped my trans(knock on wood). I did load the 120 setting, for giggles. Man it makes my truck go and blow smoke!

I liked my PPE Hot+2 Et on lv6 on long hwy trips I can get 20 to 21 mpg and 16 around town, towing 10k and can still get 15 hwy mpg, I'm half crazy and tow on lv6 to

Hey Nick,

I have some questions regarding diagnostics capabilities/features between the Predator vs PPE:

  • I understand that the Predator allows you to check Injector Balance Rates - Does the PPE have this capability?
  • I am also told that the PPE allows you to turn OFF EGR codes, when a blocker plate is installed. Does the Predator have this capability?
  • I understand that the PPE has the Reset and Relearn feature for the Allison Transmission. Does the Predator have this capability as well?
Thanks.

It does but I'm honestly not sure if its an option or not. For the price of the PPE, I sure would hope so.

Second question, I dont know. Mine isnt blocked so I never bothered to check it.

To my knowledge, you cant reset the TCM.

Also, I ran the 65 tune all the way down to Florida with an encloded trailer in tow. Dragging a what felt like a concrete box behind me, I averaged 14.8 mpg running the speed limit, between 65 and 70. I was in no hurry so I never once got over 70. The actual mileage ranged from 14.5-14.8 so it was very consistent. I would have loved to run empty at those speeds again to see if I could break 23. Ive since installed an S&B intake so I'm curious to know if I gained any or not. Either way, I was happy with almost 15 towing.

How big was the trailer? 14.5-14.8 pulling a large trailer is excellent!

I'm curious to see what numbers you get next time you go on a highway trip not towing.

I'm going to be making a fishing trip down to Key West at the end of June (Approx. 3,500 total round trip) and I'm trying to see if I can justify a programmer to gain back some fuel economy. Diesel fuel is $4.999 to $5.159 around here already. This is totally crazy. :mad5:

Would the 65 tune on the Predator be comparable to the 90 tune on the PPE? I realize that the Predator numbers are at the wheels and the PPE's are at the flywheel.

Thanks again for your input.

I had a tandem axle, 14 foot I think, enclosed. It wasnt too heavy, but it was loaded down and a box cutting through the wind.

Ray, a programmer is definately gonna help you out for economy. No doubt about it. If you're interested, I could let you borrow my Predator for a month or so. Run some fuel through it and see if it helps you. I could run my Hyperpac so no big deal to me. Ive sent it out to a few people to try it out so its really no problem.

I thought the 65 tune was comparable to the PPE 90. The Predator 85 felt hotter to me and the throttle response was way, way better than PPE. It was mainly my personal preference though...I like a sensative throttle. Some dont.

I made a trip last year to Charleston SC. I ran the 85 tune the entire way. At 70, my first tank was 22.1. I also hit some stop and go traffic which took an hour or so. I imagine that the same trip, same speed, same tune, I could probably squeeze 23. At 75, I got 20 even. At 80, it dropped to 16.5. So, I pretty much know what I can get running empty. The a/c was on the entire way. This was a year ago when the truck was fairly new with 6 or 8000 miles on it. I'm at 26,500 now, running amsoil, and also have an S&B intake so I would like to see what I'm capable of running a complete tank at 70.

You know, I may have to take you up on your offer. I'm having to drive now like a timid old lady trying to squeeze as much mileage as I can. So far, since the first of this year, my average is down to 14.34 mpg for all miles driven (All hand calculated), which really sucks. These fuel prices are killing me right now, especially since the truck is my daily driver now.

I figure that if I can get another 2 to 2.5 mpg with a programmer, it will pay for itself in less than 10,000 miles. A 3 mpg improvement will get it down around 8,000 miles. Heck, I'll be driving 6,000+ of those miles in June and July alone. If I could get this truck back up to the 18 mpg I was averaging in 2006 I'd be ecstatic. These calculations are looking way better than I was expecting, but a real life test will be the proof in the pudding. I can't ask for any better way to see if this is the way for me to go.

I'll email you my contact information and phone # when I get home in a day or so and we can decide how to go about it.

Thanks. I really appreciate your help.

Nick

Is your Predator the U7186? If it is where did you find how to check the balance rates? I can't find them on mine. I really like this programmer but do not get the mileage you get. My truck stays in the 17mpg range and I run empty all the time.

We should have the same part number. I dont really think we can check balance rates on 06's and newer. I know you can with 04.5-05's because I remember doing it on my old truck....
