driver rear seal blown again

Glad someone enjoyed it...I was beginning to think you 6.5 guys didn't have a sense of humor...:biggrinjester:

I put it in the same way the one that lasted 30k miles. The lip side facing the diff and the open side toward the bearings.

i dont know how your particulair seal looks like, there are diffs in the make up.
some have a flange[can only be put in one way] others have single lip with a visible spring around it in the open side, and others have a double lip facing away from each other, one to keep oil in [spring loaded], the other to keep dust out [closed side].spring side always faces the brg.

Silly me, I read "rear seal blown" in this 6.5 diesel engine forum and thought that he was having problems with a rear main (and possibly a CDR). Good thing that I read the rest of the thread.:yikes:

Isn't there a "Drivetrain" forum somewhere on this board?

Regards,

Probably, but it's likely full of DMax guys ... 6.5 stuff tends to get lost in those forums, and they attract all kinds of misinfo. (like the guys who wanted us to forego the TCC lock mod in favour of just pushing the Tow/haul button)

I know what you're saying, Golds, but I tend to like my 6.5 stuff all in one place; I'm not too smart, and I understand it better that way. :)

Sorry to go off-topic here, but I have a question about replacing the rubber bushings in the front of my dually. Where should I post that? Is the 6.5 section ok?

What's wrong with the Tow/Haul button?):h

Okay. Point taken about being lost in the shuffle. Maybe 6.5 drivetrain posters can be specific about such questions in the Title if they are going to post about such things in the 6.5 Diesel Engine section...?

Regards,

Damn! My new seal is leaking. I think my e-brake is too tight. The driver side is tight and the passenger side doesn't seem to tighten. I lossened the adjustement so hopefully that will do the trick.

Try a speedy sleeve next time you go through this. It's easy to install and will probably take care of your problem.

NAPA - it will come with a new seal, too. It's in a kit - ask for it specifically. It should come with an installation tool, as well.

Well I finally got around to fixing my leaky seal. After talking to a friend of mine who has done quite a few of them, he thinks I didn't seat the bearings all the way when I replace the bad seal. He also took a look at the axel stem and said it was good and wouldn't need a sleave. I got it all buttoned up and went to top off the diff fluid and it dribbled out when I opened the plug. With the amount that came out when I replaced my sill it should need to be topped off. I topped it off the last time so could there be excess somewhere it the axel somewhere. I am baffled

Been a while since i did one, have a look at the fillplug location, it might be below centerline of axle. if it is then with vehicle level the oil will stay in the pumpkin and not run out of the housing ends.

When changing drum brgs and/or seals ,I grease the rear brg and oil the front brg, after oil fill i drive with one side of the truck in the ditch for a 1/4 ml to let oil find its way in the drum brg cavity, then do the same with other side. When back home i check oillevel again, and add some more.If you grease the front brg too,the grease wont let the oil trough for a while.
