driver rear seal blown again

did you clean the seal contact area on the axle last time you replaced the seal? Use a lenght of emmery band and shine it up.check for grooving where the seal lip rode.check axle stub with the rear bearing for slip fit, and use old outer brg race or whatever will fit to press or hammer the seal home, dont bang it in with a punch, and dont push it in to deep either, usually flush or no more then 1/32" below bore edge.and keep it straight.put a lick of oil on seal lip and axle.
preload the brg's per manual.

I will check everything. I used a block of wood to put the seal in flush. I didn't check the stub to see if it was smooth the last time. Maybe that was my mistake.

I am going to tear it appart now.

I think I may have found why I blew the seal. I cleaned the spindle and lightly sanded it just for good measure. Then put it all back together. I went to top off the fluid in the dif and some came out. I think I may have over filled it a month ago. Would that cause it to blow?

How tight is your bearing? If your bearing is a bit worn, you'll go through seals like nothing. Overfilling won't blow out he seal. A burred axle could cause the problem too.

And check that axle vent... if you overfill, that's where it should go. Path of least resistance.

The brakes aren't hanging up at least I don't here it or feel it. How would that cook the seal since they don't come in contact?
The same way the grill cooks your porterhouse, even though it's not touching. My driver's side rear seal is gone too, because my caliper was hanging up enough to make too much heat. I couldn't feel a thing though. I didn't even notice until I smelt the fluid that had puked on to it. I checked the rotor temp with a infared heat gun and my driver's side was 270*F and my pass side was 160*F. My ex had the same problem with hers, except it was the ebrake that hung up on hers. I don't know if it would have done it again or not, because I still haven't changed the seal.

I put it in the same way the one that lasted 30k miles. The lip side facing the diff and the open side toward the bearings.

did you put that seal in the right way, with the lip towards the brg, open side of seal that is.

The bearing isn't worn at all. This time I took some light sand paper and lightly sanded it. Hopefully this will not blow on me for another 30k.

Vitamins

I use Imodium for that little problem, Rodd (driver rear seal blown). :)

(just in case, though, try this link)

I take imodium as a daily suppliment:biggrin5: I never leave home w/ out it.

:bigear: I just saw this smile and laughed. This is what I looked like until I grew into my ears. rofl. Satalite ears, dumbo, I've heard them all. Man now I am starting to cry bringing back all those traumatic childhood tormentors. :D
