door locks & cig lighter electrical problem...

I am having this problem with the cig lighter fuse blowing and it kills the door locks and cig lighter.

No I did not think much about it because I have a electric plug in cooler and my sat radio in the sockets ( have 3).

I replaced the cig fuse and it kept happening...hhhmmm

Must be my cooler. Well I ran my own 12v socket and cooler is in there now...Well it blew again..... Well I had only my little rechargeable light that fits into the cig lighter n charges when plugged in (little led light) n my sat

It seems like if you have anything more in there then the portable sat radio in there when you hit the door locks it blows the fuse everytime

As long as you don't use the locks it is fine from what I can tell.

I still hear the relay for the door locks so that power source it working...... I tried to test this for the last 3 months and 20 fuses later...still lost

Now I started looking at the wiring for this.

It seems like there might be a problem with the convenience center. I am not sure but I am trying to figure this out......:mad2:

anyone have any ideas?

Which fuse exactly is it that blows? Have you taken an ampmeter to it to check current draw? I have seen bad power plugs cause this to happen. As soon as you apply a load it heats up and shorts out, when it cools the plug tests fine. Also since you say it happens when you hit the locks, do any of them seem sluggish? I'll check my diagrams later to see what all is on the power point circuits if you don't have those diagrams.
 
it is the fuse for the cig lighter. The diagram shows the same fuse runs 1/2 the power for the door locks.

No it just don't work. replace the fuse and all is good.

I have 3 plugs at the ashtray if I am right they are all powered by the same source if I am correct
and all blow the fuse. I might be wrong and that is the answer. The haynes does not show this

I been testing this out and trying to see if it is to much load or just electrical.

I do think you are right on when it heats up but just the little draw from charging a little light ( size of your pinky) and running the sat radio does not draw much at all....

I do know I never had a problem till I ran the eletric 40 qt cooler...

If I had the dash out n could see what I am looking at then that would be great....wishful thinking..but in reality this is a hhhmmmm what can I test thing...

I do know what you mean but it is not the locks that are doing it. As long as I do not have anything in use in the cig lighter it will not blow. I tried and used my cig lighter and it does not blow
 
If I am reading your problems correctly, it sounds like you might have a short or problem with your plug-in cooler.

Will it blow the fuse with anyother plug-in accessory? Try something other than your sat. radio. My guess is that it takes alot of juice to run that cooler.

I agree with alot of juice this is why I tried different ways with and without it...:thumbsup:
 
update....

well the story continues...

I did not have anything at all in all 3 sockets and I blew 3 fuses yesterday and 1 today...

This is driving me up a wall....

Oh here we go again... change fuse to go into story so doors can lock or unlock...

I have to figure out how to test this so I can figure out what it the problem....

update....

Well I think I am backfeeding the circuit somehow. I did try and change so things around. It is a long story.

Anyhow under the dash there is a panel that you can hook up other stuff. It is where the harard flasher is. I guess it is called a fuse panel reley:confused:.
Anyone know what it is called?

I had some of my ass plugged into there. Well I removed all non oem wires and moved them to another spot on the panel and blew the dash fuse last night. So now I ran a wire to the batt with a 25 amp fuse and left all the oem wires alone. So far good. I still can't believe this would be blowing the fuses but I guess the panel ties into the fuse box on the side of the dash.
 
That's refferred to as the convenience cenetr and it was intended for factory add on items and such. I can try and get you a diagram of that one as well, but most of those circuits tie directly into the body harness.
 
thanks that would be cool. That is what I thought when putting the wires there but some how it must not like it. It would be cool if I knew what did what at the box.
It just does not make sense since they go before the fuse box. I thought I would be safe adding them there but I must be wrong.

I am trying to figure out a way that I can run a wire from the batt lets say 10 g to a relay then to a separate panel box. Tehn run a ign wire to the relay so there will be very little draw. This way when I turn the key on I can run all my stuff without interfering with the oem stuff. I just have to find a good ign wire so it does not have a melt down.

thanks for the help so far. Also it would be cool to run the ign wire from the conv box to my new box so I don't have to have more wire under there then needed.:thumbsup:
 
I had the same problem on my '97, and it turned out the problem was the blown lightbulb for the ashtray. Pulled the bad bulb out, no more blown fuses...
