I know ya'll will have some answers and suggestions for me. I will appreciate your time and knowledge in helping me figure this out.

Problem: Part I. -- 1. Driving the truck down the highway, stalled out after 3 miles. Waited ten minutes. Starts up and stalls again in 3 miles.
2. Does not stall when idling or revving it up (parked).
3. While parked, turned on the parking light, truck died in 2-3 seconds. Waited a half an hour, started truck. Ran and idled 1/2 hour. No problem.
Part II. -- When the problem started, I disconnected the negative battery cables for about 30 minutes. Reconnected cables and drove about 100 miles and problems started again.

Part III. -- Put a diagnostic key into the ALDL (after problems started again), No codes set in memory...only flashes 12. BUT, with the key in the diagnostic port, the Service Throttle Soon stays lit on the dash (but does not stay on when the key is out).

Yesterday, truck started once. Idled for about 5 minutes. Died and would not start the rest of the day (Sunday 08-09-09). The next morning, the truck started. Idled about 5 minutes. I put on the Parking Light switch. The truck died within 3 seconds. After about 1/2 hour, I was able to start the truck. I let the truck idle for about a 1/2 hour to charge the batteries. I did not try turning the Parking Lights back on to see if the truck would die. Coincidence...maybe. Only time it ever happened.

I only owned the truck since May 23rd and have only driven it 400-500 miles.

- Year: 1994
- Truck model and class (ie: c2500) K2500
- Automatic or Standard Automatic

- Replaced parts and mods (IP, PMD, chip/PCM, TM, injectors etc)
I haven't replaced any of these parts. The truck is still new to me.

- Battery cables and grounds (removed, cleaned and tightened): Already done.
- Glow Plugs - how many miles on them? Unknown. What type? Unknown. _
- Injectors - last changed at UNKNOWN.

History: (Describe how the problem first appeared.)
- What were you doing when it happened? See top of thread post.______________
- How was the truck running fine before this problem appeared? Seemed to run fine. But would not really know details and fine points since diesels are new to me.
- Has this problem ever happened before? UNKNOWN prior to purchase.
- Describe any related factors that might be part of the problem. ______________
- Have you checked for DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)? (Y.N) YES. NO CODES set.

Diagnostics:

1] Starting:
1a] Does the engine start? _________
1b] Does the engine crank over? ________
1c] Are your batteries fully charged? New batteries.
1d] Have you removed, cleaned, and tightened all battery connections? YES. 1e] Does your Wait to Start light come on for a time? How long? Do not have a Wait to Start light.
1f] Does your glow plug light come on? YES. For how long? 5-10 seconds.
1g] Do you see smoke from the exhaust while cranking? What color? A puff of white smoke when it starts. Then disappears, and afterwards, nothing.

2] Fuel Issues (if not running):

2a] Can you hear your lift pump working? For a short time after the engine stops.
2b] Do you get a steady flow of fuel from the water drain (T-handle) ? yes.
2c] Loosen the inlet line from the IP – is fuel coming out (Lift Pump on)? Have not done. Just the air bleeder on the filter, no air, only a steady flow of fuel comes out.
2d] Loosen an injector line and crank the engine - does fuel come out? Have not done.
2e] Do you hear a vacuum (hiss) when you remove the fuel cap? Have not done.

Thanks alot for the help. I'm :mad2::confused:

Try to jump the LP first from 12V source, see if you can keep it running or not.

Although, it does sound like PMD. Time to call Leroy at PMDCable.

Does sound like the classic PMD, however having an inoperative liftpump can also cause PMD like failures. Like JMJ said, make sure your lift pump is operating proporly before getting a remote mount heatsink and new (not used) PMD. You said you opened the valve, how was the stream? Was the truck running or just key on?

Check that the Lift pump is running by opening the drain valve up front, if fuel comes out and the engine does not die your LP is fine.

Likely a PMD failure. Replace your PMD with a fresh one on a remote cooler. Use a #7 resistor with the new PMD

A DTECH is the best bang for the buck.
Many companies sell the extension cables for very little $$$$ online

Use a good finned heat sink and mount it behind the grill in a cool spot with the PMD and connector on the NON wet side.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Now, to add to the background situation -- When the truck was first purchased, the fuel gauge showed about 1/2 tank. The man who sold the truck to me, apparently had not used the truck as much as he used to cause he bought another truck. He would only put in a few gallons of fuel at a time in the 6.5.

(I also now remember that he said he replaced the fuel filter last October. He had also driven the truck to South Dakota and back during the winter time.)

The next time I went to town (50 miles away), I filled the tank up completely. No problems with the engine cutting out.

What I am thinking now, is that the fuel filter is getting clogged up. I plan on buying a new one in a couple of days and see if that fixes the problem. The filter is something that needs to be done anyway -- maintenance.

This problem only started after I filled up the tank. Some particles in the tank must have gotten stirred up and eventually made their way to the filter.

So, we shall see if that cures the problem.

You may want to put some biocide in there and some additive.

Your filter may have water on it. To drain it, just open the t-valve to a clear plastic or glass jar.

It is a good idea to change the filter anyway.
