Mine did the same thing and I found the ground wire to the frame from the firewall wa sbroken off. It is down on the fram by the down pipe. You might have to move rubber flap on the inner fender to see it.
 
Where there is smoke, must have been fire, so from the smoke out the exhaust you would expect there to be fuel, that was an original assumption. Good practice to check at the injector too, but it will be little dribbles. So then you have to know why you dont have enough heat, or is the timing off? If your CPS is bad and the OS is somewhat iffy then it would be difficult to start. If IP timing is set way off. you could put a couple drops of a starting fluid in the intake, like thread off the IAT sensor and drop some in, very little that is, and once it fires it might stay going. You could have lost some compression from cylinder scratches without oil pressure.
