This is going to be a thread about a project I'm going to start, hopefully soon, on my 1992 Ford F350 non-turbo international 7.3 Diesel. I am currently saving up some money to start the project, which if I understand correctly, is going to be pretty interesting. It entails the custom placement and plumbing of a turbocharger to a truck that has had no affiliation with a turbo before. Placement and materials require is going to be some of the first steps. I may have a turbo picked out, that puts out about 52psi boost (If Eddie will sell it to me!) or I may get one custom built if money permits.

After the turbo is picked out/built I need to find a good location to mount and draw out plumbing for it. No one ever said turbos had to go on top!

If anyone has any kind of knowledge about this process, feel free to post here and there whenever you chose, to help out.

I'll post pictures and more later on, as the time comes.
:D

Do you have a large selection of turbos that you can use or only about three choices like us 6.5TD guys?

Nice looking truck!

Well technically you can use any turbo if you make a custom setup. These were diesels designed to run without turbos. But, when one is added by owner these things can actually runnn.

I'm puttin two 4.6l mustang turbos on my 93 7.3idi, but i have room on both sides and i do my own custom exhaust and headers all the time so its not a big job, one on each side with 4" exhaust and 5" stacks behind the cab, i'm rebuildin the engine so I was told with the fresh rebuild it could stand 16lbs boost, i wouldnt recamend more than the stock 10lbs on your engine without doin alittle overhaul because once an engine is broke in a certain way, it doesent like having a big power boost all the sudden it makes em wear out real quick, or so the good diesel mechanics say.

This article will now be dedicated to information on adding turbos and custom turbos onto these IDI engines/trucks. I currently do not actually own the '92 F350 anymore. But, the guy who does own it, has a profile on this site too. I now drive a 92 W250 Ram. 5.9 Cummins. 99 ford 5 speed tranny lifted up on 35s long bed 4x4. But, I would like to continue this topic, because of how much trouble some people are having when it comes to turbocharging these older fords.

With that being said!

Yes I would have to agree with you. :iagree: 15psi on these idis is close to a line I wouldn't pass. On your brand new engine however it is going to be a little less likely to be damaged, but it will still have the same effects. I would just play it safe for a while and run 15 or 16 and no worries.

I like what you're going to do with the twins. Sounds like a fairly good design. Not to mentionnnn you have the experience that makes the job a whole lot easier. Haha. If or when you get started, be sure to snag some photos! I would love to see the project in action.

I'm just about ready to start putting my twin turbos in. for anyone who is thinking about putting a turbo on a pre powerstroke 7.3l, the ones with a factory turbo have bigger piston wrist pins and supposedely a few othe things heavier, so dont plan on puttin to much boost on a non turbo engine they wont handle probly 8-10lbs max im told.

I traded that truck a while back for a cummins before i got around to turbo work. But, he's right more than 10lbs is bad and definitely shouldn't have 15 or higher ever.
Just build a motor meant to be turbocharged
