hey im buying a 1979 Chevy 4 door dually and im planning on puttin a cummins into it and i would like 600HP from it but i dont know much about these cummins motors and i would like all the imput i can get im also surfin the net to find out all i can about this before i even start.

but my ???? is what would be the best motor for this???

this truck will be a daily driver/work horse

The EASIEST to swap would be a 12 valve.

But, to get it to 600 HP, you're gonna be droppin' some $

To put down 600 RELIABLE, daily driveable, do the things a truck does, horsepower is gonna put you between $10k - $15k in performance upgrades, not including the engine.

for dd/workhorse, do you need 600 hp? unless it is for racing/ sled pulling, i would thing 350-400 hp would be more than plenty. (says the guy who dd/tows with a 4.3L, and is impressed by the oodles and gobs of 6.5L power his old man has!)

Think of it like this.........

It's like owning a diesel.

Once you own a diesel, you'll never want a gasser again.

When I de-tune my truck back to stock, it still puts down 387 HP to the wheels running on nothing but hardware, but it feels like a dog. It's like someone neutered it.

Once you get used to big power everyday, everything else feels.............blah.

Excellent point!

I haven't been spoiled with big power yet, so i think everything has plenty of get-up.

Back on the truck, do whatever you want, as it is yours, but IMHO, the good basis would be a p-pumped 12 valve backed up with a NV5600 running through a south bend clutch.

If the 5600 isn't bulletproof, can't you run a g56 mercedes from a CR generation?

good luck!

p-pumped 12valve w/180 or 215 pump - $1500
S300 in 64 or 66mm for daily driving. - $1500 less used.
downpipe- $200
5 x .016's or .018's - $600
4 gsk- $150
#60 valve springs- $150
titanium retainers harnded keepers- $350
DV's 191 or 022's- $225

Tabb the KDP, set the timing at around 18-21
Retorque the head bolts
You might get close to or around 600 without even having to take the pump off and sending it in.

Under $5k including the price of the motor give or take.
Obvioulsy you'll need a beefed up trans/clutch to support that though.
I think that combo would get you pretty close to 600 and be reliable. Thats about hte cheapest route I can figure.

BTW I would opt to run the nv4500 if I were you. Much cheaper easier to come by. Its dimensionally alot smaller and lighter than the NV5600. The G56 can be used but those are probably the weakest option.
