Cracked the head on the starter - over torqued?

The original is at the rebuild shop.

The 6.2 for manual Getrag off the 89 seemed the same as the 6.5 manual.

I've been checking starter part numbers and found some different

GM starter bolt washer Part number 15650963 Starter Bolts 15544950

Trying to be chincy and save a couple of bucks bit me in the ass again. Going back to just getting my original rebuilt all the time

What happened to the original starter?,..that would be the right one for comparing.
A starter for a manual tranny will fit an AT aplication, but not the other way around cause of a slightly longer nose cone.
It might also be the starters you have were for a 6.2,there could be a diff there too,..not sure
I'm pretty sure it ain't the bolts that caused you grief.

We compared the 4 starters and all the heads appear to be the same - except for the cracks.

I will try to install the original again tomorrow. To late in the day today and far to hot

Finally got the starter installed yesterday.

The only thing I did different was to install and torque the starter bolts first. Then I installed the front brace and tightened it. And then the wires.
I still have no clue what happened to the first 2 starters, unless they were bound on the loose brace. I have yet to talk to anybody that has ever seen a starter nose crack.

That would be the correct sequence.
