CowBoy Caddilac Dead Again

Looks like there was just a touch of "edge-riding" on those bearings as a result of the crank throw not being supported and wallowing around in the big-ends of the rods. The good news is that the sides of the rods look pretty good.

I would say you're probably ok..

I am new to the 6.5 td world. BUT !! From what I can see from the crank picture, the piece that broke off was stressed due to heat. Look at the edge of the break, you will see the tell tale signs of heat.. Maybe oiling issues ? I would try and find the cause of this failure first.

I think that is just light being reflected that makes it look like heat stress. Like a prism. This is a somewhat common problem on these engines, although that may be overstating that fact a little.

Oh man, I get a knot in my stomache thinking this could be my ultimate fate.

Would the forged crank in the P400 eliminate the issue of broken cranks.

I rebuilt a few gassers blocks, and cranks that fail is normally due to poor oiling, unbalanced, improperly installed (main bearing clearance ). Now yes they will fail if you start adding stress beyond the designed limits of the crank. I do believe that a forged will be more forgiving. I rebuild for hobby so I am anal about due diligence. I have seen a many slap on a balancer without the proper tool, and guess what ?? yep the crank fails!!!! A crank that is well installed and lubed and is running in an engine that is not putting demands beyond its design limits "should" last a very long time..

Now in a diesel , I have no baseline to place a comment.

The picture dosent represent the way it looks that closely but there is absalutly no evidence that it got hot in the area of the break. no discoloration at all, also i would think that if lack of oiling had been the problem there would have been other signs elswear in the motor.

At any rate i put the motor in on thursday and got it running today. it seems to be running very smoothly without any issues. I havent drove it to much but i do believe all is well.

forgot to mention that i pulled the valve covers to reseal then since they where leaking and while i had the IP off i cranked the fuel screw about 1/4 turn and i advanced the timing a touch. now if i could just buil some more boost, well the WG is just wired shut so that the next fix
