My bro-in-law just acquired a 95 extended cab, z71 6.5....which I'm about to start putting together a list of 'stuff' he needs to buy....so I can install it. It's currently totally stock and is a pretty clean truck except for a large dent in the extended cab part - behind the drivers door. I'm not going to cause you guys any stress by telling you how cheap he purchased this truck. :D

My first question is how much do these half tons weigh? (he's out of town right now or I would just have him look at the title - actually, I'm starting to wonder if the weight on the title is accurate). My 01 gasser z71 weighs 4817lbs

Second question; are yall having to purchase some sort of 'heavy duty' registration/tag? - like I have to for my 2500...well, the tag that is.

The tag office and the insurance company told them that the truck is a HD,...in fact the insurance company told them they had to carry a commercial insurance policy on the truck. ?? What the crap is that all about?
They also told them that the truck is over 5000lbs and that was why. My 2500 weighs 5319lbs. Are these half tons really that heavy?

I thought all 1/2 tons were less than 5k lbs for a reason.
Thanks
Smitty

No special tag required on mine, no HD or it would be F VIN not S, use that to your advantage S is LD/EGR truck by federal regulation, IIRC before I added a bunch of stuff I was 6480#, would be more like a "Heavy 1/2" than a standard 1500 gasser

Thanks for the info Tim.
Wow, 6480?, that's more than the GVW of my 2500 (5999). I guess the extended cab is pretty heavy - compared to the difference in weight between a long bed and short bed.

Thanks again.

Add in weight of the Diesel, the 4L80, the frame, the 14 bolt rear, 6 lug axles, 16" wheels/tires, larger dia torsion bars and it starts racking up weight.

Commercial insurance on a 1/2 ton? I call shenanigans! lol. 1/2, 3/4, 1tons don't need commercial insurance unless it is used for commercial use... now if you go into the 4500+ then you need commercial insurance, or thats what I know around here with my insurance.

How you register your vehicle with the state all depends on the state. For me...

Ohio categories are:
Passenger
Light Non-commercial Truck (up to 3/4 ton)
Heavy Non-commercial Truck (3/4 - 1 ton)
Commercial Truck
Farm Truck

My truck is considered the heavy non-com truck. My truck is considered a 2500 but it is identical to a heavy half (1500 6.5L). So I can see the tags being the same as your 2500.

Hey Tim, I think I'm confused....):h sorry, so your 1500 (from the factory, net weight on the title) is 6480 or is that after you added all the stuff you mentioned?

Thanks again

When the voters in FLORIDA voted out the property tax increase, they decided to stick it to us on vehicle registration fees. So yes a 2500 is EXPENSIVE now in FL. They tried to charge me like $250 for my BURB until they boss caught it and said it was an SUV so it was only about $70.

Build sheet from GM states my K1500 (S Vin) Ext Cab was 3000kg (6615#) with a GVW rating of 6600.
HD Chassis Equipment, 4L80 Trans, 6 Lug 14 bolt rear, 4x4, Towing package w/HD Trailering Equipment....floor mats etc. Like TD said, it all adds up.

Take the Vin number to a Stealership and have them run a Vehicle Build Inquiry on his truck. I don't remember if that VIN Checker posted on another thread will give that data or not.

Gotcha - I didn't realize the 1500 diesel had hd frame rails (8" I'm guessing? - same as 3/4 ton).

I'm gonna have my bro-in-law do as suggested and make mention of the "S" in the vin.

I just paid $86.40 for my new registration sticker (on my 2500) and that's what they're charging my bro-in-law for his 1500.

Oh well, thanks again guys.

Louis, My computer dumped and I lost the site. Can you post up the web site or the link to the thread that it was in? "VIN" is to broad a search term and "VIN Check" and "VIN Web Site" results in several hundred results.... Thanks

Thank you sir, Bobbie Martin's post was 100% correct. Thanks, I've bookmarked it...again.

Smitty, I hope you brother-in-law gets things sorted out in his favor.

Paul
