I am new here but not new to the 6.5. I owned a couple of them in the past and recently picked up a 92 k2500. I use my trucks for towing and am plannig on installing one of the fan upgrade kits using the Durmamax fax blade and heavy duty clutch to help keep temps in check.

What experiences and results has anyone had with these? I plan to stay with a 190deg stat, as it seems to be the better choice in terms of engine efficiency and economy. Right now the temps hold steady at about 190 on the gauge.

Any info would be appectiated.

You're on the right track, IMO. Just make sure that you use only an AC Delco thermostat. Also, while you're replacing your fan, pull your rad and clean the hell out of it. A lot of guys recommend the Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner that you can get from your grocery store.

You will want to pull the oil coolers and clean the mat of build up on the condenser from the oil coolers. Possible you may need the radiator rodded/boiled out at a radiator shop depending on it's shape.

A HO water pump is a must.

I would look at a lower temp t-stat if you find yourself going over the 210 mark towing. A fan clutch mod or lower temp clutch also helps to keep you under the 210 mark. You fight the lag time of the fan and thermostat dealing with a sudden hill/load. The temperature will climb until the thermostat opens and the spring in the fan moves - then you wait for the fluid flow to kick in the fan. Ideally this will happen before you go over the 210 mark. I found you have to shift the temperatures lower for this to happen both fan clutch and t-stat.

Pulling a 10% grade I used a 9 blade 20" steel fan, Kennedy clutch and low temp (summer) thermostat to keep it under 210 pulling a 28' cargo trailer. This worked in 32 degrees to 100 degrees.

I have a preference for the 4 bolt Kennedy low temp fan clutch as it worked so well for me. Others will point out the latest thread on water pump has a better balanced flow from bank to bank - due to a design change to the pump. Bill Heath proved there is a flow problem with 4 bolt water pumps that flow more to the driver's side bank and let the passenger side run hotter.

The stock 6 blade fan and clutch is best sent to the scrap yard - hopefully not still bolted to the overheated and ruined 6.5. Been there done that...

Thanks for the input. The truck has a almost new radiator installed by the PO and new water pump. So, two less things for me to do. I am going to change the stat just as preventative maintenance. About the only thing I am concerned about on this truck is keeping it cool, as that was an issue on my other 6.5's. Guess I will get a fan ordered this week and installed as it will be time to dig the trailers out of winter storage soon.

New High Output water pump or a new stock low flow pump? Just because it is new doesn't mean it is the high flow unit that helps cooling. 97 and up years will fit and are the HO pumps.
