i have a 1998 k3500 ext cab 4x4 dually with automatic

ok the problem is it would start off shifting all gears then the truck would rev up and down shift in to second gear. i've had everyone tell me its a ground some where. so went through every ground i can find, and still not shifting.
let me clearify when the truck is ice cold it will shift in to 4th gear then the truck starts to warm up, then it down shifts to 2nd gear. and that is it not going pass second gear til its ice cold again.

put a scanner on it and no comuitication to the computer, so no codes from engine and transmission

i've been racking my brain for 3 weeks now, can anyone HELP

thanks

Your going to have to find out what is wrong with why you can't scan it. Check the cigar fuse and all the other fuses as that is the most common problem. Going to 2nd gear is limp mode, so you definately have a trans issue with it.

i did check the cig fuse the fisrt time it was blown, then second time the fuse was good.

I think my next is going to fliud change and filter.

dont know what to do.

i went through alot of writes on here sounds like alot of problems like mine. but mine is the other one without comuitication?

does your CEL come on when you first turn the key? the important grounds are the 3 at the back of the engine pass side on the dipstick brace

Ive had several problems. After I bought my truck it would shift at higher and higher rpms. After about a year it wouldnt shift anymore. I changed the fluid filter and shift solenoids.

The other truck a friend had and it was stuck in 1st. I told he to try changing the shift solenoids and he did. It didn't fix the problem so he sold me the truck. I changed them and it fixed the problem. I think he put a old one back in on accident because hes a idiot.

I've had this truck for 7 monthes and its been a good truck til now, I dont know too much about this truck but i think the tranny fliuld needs to be changed. well im there i can take a closer look whats there

The solenoids are about $35 to change. If you have the pan off you may want to try that. Im not real big on OBD2 so Im not sure what the difference is. I know the computer in my truck is only for the transmission. It has no engine computer. I would assume your computer does everything.

Can anyone tell if there is a way to test the soleinods in the tranny to make sure they are working?
Or just change them?

The Ferm is right about chasing the ability to scan. If you lost signal to the tranny there is nothing it will do properly.

You could change the solenoids and most likely end up with "known good" ones in your toolbox for the future like half of us. Ohms test should be 20-40 ohms range.

Can someone w/ better memory help me here- is his truck in the bad ignition switch group? Check voltage at the fuse for the tranny sig if it drops 25% or more as the key turns on instead of full power suspect a bad ignition switch.

Check resistance from tranny case to negative battery post - looking for zero ohms.
Hope some of this helps.

update jan/29/13

ok i went and bought a scanner and when i hook it up. It says no powertrain and / or dtc's stored.

Going to add my $.02 worth to maybe help with your problem. Take your grounds from where they are on the dipstick brace and move them to your Filter Manager bolt, behind you intake. The dipstick brace goes into a water jacket and will, and in your case did, cause corrosion. 2 wires should be single wires to a ground and 1 wire should be a double ground wire. Also check on your grounds from the flywheel cover to your frame. Bad grounds will really mess up a computer signal.
