As always, the devil is in the details and this look like some serious promise if the actual product matches the press releases. Especially if Mazda can get this past the EPA.

IIRC, Daimler discovered the use of a pre-combustion chamber in petrol motors which yielded an even higher efficiency boost than Mazda's claim, but had yet to see where anybody looked to move that development into the retail product line.

Interesting that the potential 'advancements' to a petroleum motor have roots in 100+ year old technology . . .
 
Would think this setup may be picky on octane and alcohol content..and other kerrap in 'gas'. It's interesting tech. Read another article saying they want a lower burn temp in the engine but don't you need heat to burn off the terrible terrible terrible unspent hydrocarbons? :\ :)
