Cold starting assist

Nope. The engine is already getting diesel fuel... if it isn't getting enough compression to flash (temperature is also part of that equation) then giving it more won't help. That's why glow plugs, hotter intake air, WD40, etc help... they lower the flash point of the fuel in the cylinder.

What benefit would this make? because its warm?

I was thinking it would have the vapor in the air on the intake stroke giving it more time to burn. I would think diesel fuel would burn better then wd40.

Or maybe a spray bottle with naptha? thats the same as zipo fluid.

I would think naphtha flash point would be too low. you'd end up with early detonation. which of course is why you have to watch the staring fluid itself.

I heard the new WD40 doesnt work on diesels. Mine freezes outside so there must be water in it, I never had that problem before with it but it started freezing last year.

I heard silicone spray works good. On my IH 484 its a ether start and I had a old can of starting fluid that layed around out in the sun for about 3 years. The old stuff worked great. The new starting fluid lights to quick and will stop the engine. Now I put a block heater on it so I dont need starting fluid anymore.

The "WD" in in WD40 stands for water displacment so it wouldn't make sense for it to have water in it. That being said anything that has a low flash poin should not be used in a diesel with glow plugs due to risk of severe engine damage when the glow plugs ignite the fuel. The idea of warming the intake with a blow dryer or heat gun is your best bet. Warming the intake works because it raises the IAT and a heat gun would be better than a blow dryer due to more heat output. Easy temp fix..long term would be to install a coolant heater with a pump to circulate the coolant and warm the whole block. These install much easier than a core plug type block heater and work much better. When mine quits thats what I will install. Just my .02.

Im not sure what they put in the new wd40 to make it get icy.

I think the heater in the freeze plugs work better. My dads JD heats up real quick 1 hour or less and I put one of the external heaters like you said and it takes 3-4 hours. I may just need a bigger heater but its only a 50hp engine.

A couple of freeze-plug heaters is the ticket, no shit.

When you're changing antifreeze anyway, install one on each side for 2x1000w = 2000w heating. If it's chilly out, plug in one. If it's Alberta-cold, plug in both. If it's Northern-Alberta cold, stay in bed:)

Invest in a decent extension cord, too... at least 12 ga if it's over 15 foot long.

Well, it was -9F all day. Truck was sitting at work 10 hours. It hit one cylinder, then that was it, no start.

Tried removing the air cleaner and using a torch to heat the air in the intake. Even with a jump, no go. The engine would not start.

Waiting on my kid to come pick me up at work.

Took the day off of work tommorrow. Guess I'll go to work and try to get the truck started. Its supposed to warm up tommorrow above 0F.
