Cold start. Some no problem. Others don't. Why is that?

I used to have an Allis-Chalmers 920 Diesel garden tractor. It had a 20 Hp Lambardini air-cooled Diesel engine. I believe same engine used a great deal in refridgerated straight trucks? At any rate, it had a button you pushed, it burned fuel into the intake manifold. This thing really worked. It would start quite easily at -30degF. The manual instructed you to set throttle wide open, run the burner (15-30seconds?), turn the key. That thing really blew snow!!!

my belarus 800 had the same kind of pre heater wich injected diesel trough the hot glow coil in the intake manifold as soon as the engine turned over. In the end it kept pissing fuel so i took it off.
