cold air intake pick-up\k-47 air box

I'm curious about the effects of ram-air, as well. Now, let me say upfront that I'm only semi-versed in this area and nowhere near as knowledgeable as many on this site. But, how much real effect does anyone think a ram-air will have on a vehicle going 65MPH... especially a turboed vehicle? I guess that's my main "wondering" point... the turbo is already cramming in as much air as it can - how much more can the ram-air add to that? I can see the definite advantages to an N/A engine.

Of course, cooler intake air never hurts, of course. However, about 5 or 6 years ago I played around with using an air box vs leaving the filter open to the engine bay. I don't have any hard numbers (didn't keep any good data points back then), but I didn't notice anything significant in engine performance, either. But, maybe that's a topic for another thread.

Regardless, I do agree that if you're doing it yourself, it's - at a bare minimum - a fun project.
 
RAM air is free boost, no parasitic affect from the turbo at play. And if youre cruising at no boost or very low boost it is simply a little more air pressure the turbo doesnt have to make. If you look up compound turbos, just imagine the ram air as the first turbo, changing the ambient pressure on the inlet of the second but still getting the same pressure change ratio across it.

well friday morning we put a temp sender in the air box... at the start the temp in there was at 28.6F, started driving with the truck,(unloaded) at 30-50KM/hr, in 19 minutes the temp went down to 19-20.5F... then we got on the highway, and were driving at 80-95KM/hr, and the airbox temp went up to around 22-24F, which leads me to believe that there is somewhat of a heat-wash issue with the motor transferring heat to the air box... i am going to try and insulate the out side of the box with 1/2 inch heat-tape backed fiber-glass insulation and see if it helps.... i do not have any info on what the air box is supposed to be at with the normal ducting inside the fender, maybe someone can post up their data on that... at the time the outside temp was 14-15C.....

Alright I am confused, is it already severe winter time up there in Canada or all temps suppose to be in C?

Hey Jeff, what kind of probe do you have and what kind of display for it? If you had to extend wires at all it could also change the measured resistance that it bases the temp off of.
 
X2 on the length if especially using a RTD type temp sensor, another method I've used is K thermocouple DVM adapter module I leave under hood while testing, where the module conditions the mv output from the sensor and I extended the output leads from it to my DVM in cab, I have a pair of "instrumentation" wires left under hood thru the firewall permanent just for this purpose for when i want to grab higher temp or voltage data while driving.

The remote wireless indoor/outdoor thermometer was/is good for the air box temps but is range limited to 130F as max temp it will read and heat soaks out of range when engine is 1st shut down, eventually coming back in display range when temps come back down below 130F.

we are using a co-op brand indoor/out thermometer that we bought on sale for $9.99 2 years ago.... i did not extend it at all, and the probe is right on the side of the AEM dry-flow filter facing the ram inlet.... i still have not insulated the box, as the last couple days we have been working on our shop, jim is installing the electrical panel/circuits, and i have been digging a 3ft deep trench for the tech cable and our internet/temp sensor/ telephone lines... also the supply/return lines for our hot water heating project.... lots of projects...LOL.. also looking at pouring the cement in our 660 6.2l block this weekend...
