I was watching TV this evening, they were talking about the 2009 Shanghai automotive salon actually showing.
I was impressed by the quality of the cars shown, and, suddenly, I saw this :
dongfeng-hummer.jpg

I thought myself "Damn, this thing remember me something...." while listening the guy speaking.

He says this was manufactured by Dongfeng, powered by a 200BHP V8 turbo diesel (6.5 ?)....

next is a chinese K1500 ?

If my memory serves me right some of those were licensed to be built back in the '90's.

Insofar as some of the galleries, and the copies of other mfg's work, that does not surprise me at all. They don't hold back at trying to disguise what they have copied.

Need to send a few of their engineers to Jay Leno's garage for a while though. Be nice to see some copies of some real classics.

Moreover, if DoD computer models of the Hummer included floor panels that mimic NASCAR roof flaps, I hope build a bunch.

...and you can still purchase a brand new 1994 Audi from the company that produced them when they pulled production from them back in the day. There's no one to stop them, so they still produce them.

They're exactly the same just with a different grille. The body lines and suspension are identical. Actually, its a hummer, with a Chinese body kit on it.

I wonder if they are going to manufacture them for the USA military. coming up next a US aircraft carrier with a big made in china label on the back end:nonod:. Ed

Five hundred miles off the coast and it springs a leak of Titanic proportions - how much does "cheaper" really cost?

Putting soldiers at risk with inferior Chinese products who are already thrust into situations where one error could cost the lives of an entire mass of warriors - that sends a chill down my back.

I wouldn't send my daughters out into the civilized world with a Chinese made vehicle, let alone send out a soldier where around every corner, there's an enemy fighter hoping he will have the chance to shoot an American GI.

If the Gov't works with GM's proposal they will be majority owner of them. We would never send our troops in china made vehicles.

I don't think you would ever have to worry about the USA buying ANY military equipment from china. no senator or congress person would ever stand for it. even when Israel came out with some gizmo the USA copied it rather than buy Israeli and the israelis are better friends if ya know what I mean. the aircraft carrier was just a joke. China is very good at copying things, the USA just takes a hit every time they do it. after all why put money into R&D when you can steal the secrets. even the soviets did it with their version of the space shuttle. Ed

I know it was a joke, Edzzed. I didn't mean to come across that I was upset with what you posted at all. :D

Just the idea of chinese made anything gets me upset. I'm not sure how many failures, infections, diseases, injuries and such we as a nation really need to where we finally get to the point where we say we have had enough. Everything has a cost and we really get what we pay for. Whether we pay up front one time for the quality, or we pay long term to fix what had already broken multiple times, it still costs.

Well news flash guys, China is already building stuff that is being put into US Military hardware like it or not. As far as China making stuff for the 6.5, if it's good I welcome it, means I'll be able to keep the old girl around longer. If GM/GEP decided to manufacture parts still without gouging me with exorbinant pricing for old design parts where R&D cost has long since been recovered, I'd buy from them exclusively.

Turn the the dial back on the "way back machine", these same arguments/criticisims once made about stuff from Japan (now considered to be some of the best stuff), Brazil (quality firearms & ammo now), Taiwan, Korea, Italy, former Russian republic states ...... list goes on where those once enemies that built inferior goods realize in order to compete globally quality would have to come up to meet expectations dictated as "world class".

China is doing it also, still some room for improvement, as far as "doing business with our enemy", well check out rows of any retailer, that argument has long since died as well, unless wanting to be an isolationist/protectionist you have to eventually make friends of your enemies, easiest way to do it is to start trading with them, hold them accountable to be sure when they produce junk, but don't automatically discount them because of origin.

I sort of remember at one time when stuff was moved to Canada & Mexico to save on labor cost, "that stuff was gonna be junk", yet we have thousands possibly millions of those vehicles & parts on the road today.

I think my sig says my opinion. From what I heard Hummer is or was being sold to a Chinese company anyway. I'll leave the rest of my opinion on it to P&R.

Is a 94 Audi clone a desirable vehicle? Why? Got any photos?

Not trying to be cute - just not familiar with that rig.

-Rob :)

I am running a set of Chinese cast heads on my 94 Burb 6.5
Clearwater gets the casting from China then machines them here and uses mostly reman GM valves, springs and such.

$600 a set to the door, Can't beat it with a stick

I would like to see The US building more stuff and selling it at an affordable price BUTTTTTTTTT WE have to support our 6-1/2 habit ya know.
