Hi, I am currently looking at purchasing a 1990 Silverado extra cab truck which at some stage has been converted from the 350 petrol engine to the 6.2 Diesel engine and would like to find out some info before purchasing.
The problem I have is how to identify if it is a C or J model engine and year of manufacture etc, also I believe this model was produced through to the 90s? how can you tell the difference between an 80`s and 90`s engine
Can anyone help with this.
 
Difference in year shouldn't make much difference.
But you can try to get the casting numbers off the block. Believe it's on the bellhousing.
For vin c vs j, pull the air cleaner and look for a EGR.

Hi thanks for the info, I will check that out. Would the VIN info be altered with the installation of the diesel engine or still show the original details. Not sure how these things work. Thanks
 
Vin stays with the truck.
If it was swapped, won't tell you anything about the engine.
Can also look a the color of the block. If it looks like factory red paint, it's early 80's. (Iirc)

Also make sure it will pass whatever government inspections might be needed where you are. Sometimes a conversion is harder to pass here in the states.

Thanks, it has been converted to right hand drive and certified for NZ standards. I will look into emissions regulations for any possible upcoming changes
