You dont really have to take out that lower IP fitting but it isnt a bad idea to pull it out and make sure the little screens are clean, there is one in the bottom tip and obvious ones in my pictures. That and I bored out the fuel supply holes in it.
If youre getting the socket some parts stores may have what is actually called an OPS socket. The OPS is a common item on a lot of engines.
The one that seems too small may just need to be knocked on a little, as the electrical connector is a bit wide as it gets up into the socket, but it goes on.
Autozone usually has inexperienced checker people, not parts people. I went into napa asking to see large deep sockets and the guy asked if it was for an OPS and there was one hanging on their miscellaneous wall.
I did not remove that elbow fitting, but I suppose you could. I used a crows foot to tighten my extension hose onto that elbow.
If you "convinced" it to work with a 1" socket you've probably knocked off the top electrical connection. It's not a problem with the old one, but the new one requires it to function!!
IIRC the socket needed is 1 1/8".
Strange you were able to install a new switch with a 1"
You don't want Autozone electrical parts unless they are new AC Delco,
Sometimes the cheap price and lifetime warranty isn't worth installing 5 before you get mad demand your money back and go buy what you should have in the first place.
This OPS doesn't look very old but the only thing I can find on it is the number 68 so it's hard telling what it is.
I'm going to put together an order and get it from Rock Auto, Autozone can't even find it or the lift pump on their computor so they can order it.
