CDR routing options

But there is basically no exhaust after the 45 barb. This setup is for open header race applications.. Notice the 'check valve' in the pic also...even with this setup, there is a chance of pressurizing the crankcase without the valve.

And carburetors have venturis... (venturi effect)

Okay, somebody try it already.

Did'int think about the open header part. With 15 feet of pipe behind the 45* you could easily pressurize the engine.
Yep, my CDR works fine.

No a one way check valve for idle, the exhaust flowing past the port ( which enters the exhaust pipe and creates the Venturi) will not allow pressure back up- if you build it right. The end result sucks though, lots o smoke out the pipe. I did it and don't recommend it. That's why I say cdr or catch can.

Been there, tried it.
1- use cdr
2- use catch can system
3- vent to atmosphere
They all work, they all have draw backs. If you have to deal with anyone "official" or care about oil to the ground #3 is out. #2 is more $ and work in the beginning and takes up extra space, but if you going to go for another 150-200k miles go for it.

How about about we run with option #2 a bit more . . .

Found an interesting DIY mod from the high performance gassers (4bangers to V8’s, turbo & N/A) where they are getting good results from using commonly available air compressor filters, removing the filter, and either installing the housing naked (without the filter) or putting loofah / steel wool / copper wool in the bowl to help the oil vapor condensate. Most do this with the PVC and a few remove it. Saw one comment about using loofah over steel wool.

Here is one of the more comprehensive write-up and discussions:
http://www.svtperformance.com/forum...-oil-separator-catch-can-w-pics-write-up.html

So the questions are:
> Is using an air compressor filter (air / water / oil separator) a nicely priced alternative to a vendor supplied $100+ catch can system, or too good to be true?
> Anybody know why there was a comment about using loofah as a safer option to steel wool? (post #11 in the reference URL)
> Keep or remove the CDR?
> Anybody already do this and I missed the memo???

I know Deejay uses a water filter canister on his TDI. Its packed with real couse steel wool stuff. Looks like the stuff you get in the pots & pans scubber section of grocery store?
I think the guy in your link went with a loofa to prevent metal shaving get to the engine?? (guessing).
