Guys be sure to check your carrier bearings on the driveshaft.

Mine just blew apart leaving me stranded 130 miles from home near Albany, NY. $471 later for the tow home, and the truck's sitting in the driveway.

There's easily an inch of clearance between what used to be the inner and outer bearing races and at least 3 inches of play up down side to side in the driveshaft. The driveshaft was burning hot to the touch after the bearing blew apart at 70 mph and i immediately got off the highway. I hope the driveshaft isn't trashed.

Strange thing is that bearings had the same tad bit of wear for almost 30K miles, and all of a sudden it just totally blows out.

:mad2::mad2: I left upstate NY at 6:30 PM. I just got home 10 minutes ago.

U should have stopped by, you were about 2 and a half hours from me....):h
All in all, sorry to hear, i have triple A but it oly works for 100 miles....

my mother signed me up for triple A last christmas. Come to find out it's only basic. 3 mile tow limit...junk.... it's getting upgraded to the 200 mile coverage after this.

They will usually let you know, by noise or rumbling feeling,
that they are on the way out

Come to think of it i did have a slight rumbling sound for a while that sounded like mud terrain tires going down the road. i jacked up the back end of the truck and it went away. I just figured it was the tires. I'm really kicking myself now.:cuss::cuss:

It can be hard to find, I drove with mine making noises for about 2 weeks,
even changed front wheel bearings, thinking that's where the noise
was coming from - too bad it happened so far from home, though

Things like this always happen when you are far away from home. I was lucky when my camry's timing belt broke only 10 miles from the mechanics.

On longer wheel base trucks there is a bearing in the drive shaft that bolts up to the crossmember to carry the weight and length of the shaft. You're 96 ext cab should have one bout in line with the front of the bed. Go take a look see.:smile5:

Good to know - thanks! I've been hearing a clunk whenever I let go of the clutch - but I think its just something loose in the differential. I can't think of hearing any noises coming from that part of the truck, but I when I get time..maybe after work today - I need to check u-joints and go ahead and check that carrier bearing.

Thanks again!

no carrier bearing on my 98 extended cab or burb, I think it's extended/crew cabs with 8' bed that have the carrier bearing

weird I have found no rhym or reason with the use of them. Both of my 94's reg cabs have them. But they are cab & chassis different animal than pickups I have found out. Sometimes the hard way.:mad2:

My regular cab long bed 3500 2wd has one but my 2500 regular cab long bed 4wd doesn't. I guess it just depends on the distance between the tranny/transfer case yolk and the diff yolk.

just follow the simple rule. "if it makes sense than it can't be right.'' and it'll all go away. or you need more beer :cheers2: then repeat.:D

edit: I've got one of the stupid bearings, but I've also got about 9ft of driveshaft to need it
