Can you use old fan with spin on waterpump

I hear you. Its round 2 for me pulling the stack. New shroud, timing chain, water pump, some fabrication welding and some misc maintenance- 20 hrs work. Im back on the road. And spun the bearing on my serpentine tensioner on my road test. It was a new bearing I pressed into the pulley 2000 km's ago. Grrrr.

Dang short life on a bearing.
Pickup guys dont know how good they have it with their stack- easy to work with and flows much better than ours.
Right about now all the gmt400 guys are saying -
What?!? It gets worse than this?!? Haha- yup...

It might just be a placebo effect from spending 125 bucks on a timing chain set but I believe it starts easier.

Always possible. It does affect db2 a bit with no computer to control timing. On db2 trucks i had it written into the service schedule to correct (usually a bump) timing a hair every 50,000 mile interval.

With conformation the blade mount is the same
Ive decided against looking for a 9 blade just to do the comparison of it to my stocker. Just too many other things to spend money on that I don't have.
*UNLESS IT IS KNOWN TO HAVE MORE CFM THAN THE DMAX.

Trying to find cfm ratings on both as well as the optional 10 blade hummer fans that were used.

I can confirm the duramax fan is a 9 out of 10 on my own personal non empirical data "blowey" scale. Plus it was dead cheap and in stock at my parts store.

The 01-05 21" duramax fan blade moves alot more air than the 20" 9 blade metal truck fan does. Not sure how much air the duramax vlade moves cut down though.

Ill try and measure my overall diameter. Someone had fitted a metal blade pickup fan with the 6 bolt clutch pattern.

Thanks Ferm, iirc 20" od max, maybe 19.75"?

Ok thanks Sand that will help. There used to be 3 different metal blade fans on hummers, including a 6 bolt. They were all discontinued and replaced by plastic ones.

Currently either a 10 blade for the bolt on clutch (which I think but haven't been able to verify is same as truck mounting pattern) and an 8 blade that fits hummer's spin on fan clutch, which is a different part number than trucks use. Why they complicate all this makes no sense. Dave at Blue Hummer verified they are 2 different bolt patterns from a customer that updated to the spin on pump, and used all hummer part numbers, and his original fan would not fit.

Sad part is, appears the 10 blade went to 8 because of noise complaints- wtf?!? "Wah, my hummer is noisey, make it quite and let the engine blow instead..." Morons.

@Kennedy Diesel is one of the few that had the fans tested (Duramax and steel) and claims they work nearly the same. He is out of stock now and doesn't have a choice but to use the Duramax fan.

IMO the Duramax fan pulls more air at idle yet how can it be nearly the same at max RPM? Rigid steel vs. flex fan plastic? I have run both and agree they are both good enough to be called nearly the same at MAX RPM as far as ECT goes. As far as AC goes I find the Duramax fan has an edge at all RPM, but, it takes 115 degree day to notice the difference. And this extreme temperature matters to at least Will and I.

I swapped from the 21" duramax fan to the steel fan due to a sagging engine mount rubbing the shroud. Ran the steel fan all last summer. I have ES poly mounts in stock ready to go back in before the summer hits explicitly to put the 21" Duramax fan back in! Then I will know for sure if it's related to the extra heat from the high stall converter at max RPM.

Oh he did a comparison test? I figured somebody would have at some point, i just can't find any write ups or specs. Not surprised that I can't find it, i am horrible at looking for anything online.

Not sure what, if any, of the testing he made public. Some vendors stay out of debates or are tired of attempting to fix stupid while putting their reputation at risk in a drama spotlight. Maybe GM has issues with this info getting out.

Im not scared to post data. After 3 months of intensive testing in the controlled environment of "under my hood" I find that this fan clearly falls into the data set spectrum of "less blowey" than the duramax fan. Incidentally if you dont allow the fan clutch to slip as it should the tips of the fan appear to break the sound barrier at 3257rpm(not really)20170117_180210.jpg . This gives it the secondary qualification of "much loudness"

Update, and over on hummer forum talking about John Kennedy's fan flutches, one of the guys called him and he is on the thread going over adaptability. Here is the thread:

My latest post showing some pics of the two metal fans together:
The hummer metal fan from 95 will NOT accept the Kennedy fan clutch.
Hummer fan holes are 3.25" center to center. The truck fan is 3.75" center to center. Here are pics for comparison. This truck fan is the same mounting pattern as the duramax 21" fan. Yet to be seen is the plastic hummer fan that Dave said he will measure for us from the spin on fan blade. Fingers crossed they are 3.75". The fanclutch in the pic is from the hummer under the truck fan.
Hummer fan# 6003064. 20" diameter 7 blade
GM fan # 15992650. 19.5" diameter 9 blade

Soon we will have measurements of the current plastic hummer fan. Btw, soapstone rubbed into the stamped numbers show good.
