C2500 HD TD 'Burb dies, fires back up.

Your best bet is going to be buying a brand new PMD because, as you say, that box of 'em is a crap shoot, and just because one of those used ones works now is no guarantee it's not about to fail a month from now. And. $300 is high for a PMD, unless you're getting it with the heatsink and wiring harness. IIRC, mine cost me $285 with a heavy heatsink, resistor pack and wiring harness extender.

Who did you get your kit through? I'm looking at a Heath, but I'm looking into everything at this point.

SS diesel sells a good heatsink but the ground needs to stay on the IP and it should be remote mounted rather than on the intake

The ground you see there is actually a ground jumper I made up for the purpose. The IP still has its ground. And, while I agree remote mounting out of the engine bay would probably be better, at the time this was done I was considering installing a full commercial push bumper on the truck and didn't want to mount it somewhere that I'd have to move it again later.

Heath mounts theirs to the back side of the skid plate on 4x4 models, or you could mount it in the grille if you did not want to locate it in the bumper nose hole,
 
The truck is my daily driver, and used for my construction business, but it's also one of the response vehicles for the county emergency communications team.
From your bracket thread Bernie, for these 2 reasons you need to figure a way to get it out the engine bay, $$$ you may lose if it goes down, and response time/reliability if you are in responder mode.

It's not a 4x4, and there's no room behind the grille. The best I could do is mount it behind the bumper, but the bumper on this truck takes a lot of abuse. Everything from pushing trucks and vehicles (hence the reason I want to put a commercial push bumper on it) to "nudging" things like dumpsters into place.
 
next best place would be behind the headlights down as low as you can to reduce heat soak after engine is off. Still would get some air flow there when driving.
 
Whelp... Just spent some "mod money" I had set aside for a new downpipe and crossover. Bought a Heath kit, which from my understanding, will be the last PMD I buy.

*sigh* Not sure how GM never ended up in a class-action if these things fail all the damn time.

The problem is by total 6.5 population the ratio of fails has not been as high as it seems on the forums, wherein all one sees are the fails being reported.

Also the extended policy to repair/replace via attrition satisfied any class action that may have happened when it was a problem.

If taken to court now since so many have been turned to scrap metal the statute of limitation for GM/Stanadyne responsibility has most probably run out.

Do you think it is coincidence the "improved" driver from Stanadyne took so long to be presented as a replacement item, nope; IMO the Stanadyne lawyers told them to not field anything until such a time had expired, that would prevent them from "admitting" a problem existed by offering a "new & better" replacement part.

Yes you bought the best longest lasting unit out there to date; Bill & boys @ Heath have stood behind it since day 1 back in the 90's when driver issues were much more commonplace, mine has been on the truck for 6 years now and on my burb for 4 years. I sill carry a spare "used but good one" just in case, but have yet to need it in either vehicle.

Even as a 2wd, you could fab a plate or buy one that goes in the same location, one that came on my 4x4 really isn't skid plate at all, more like a mud shield, plastic where some have a metal plate, you could fab something similar, the mud shield will fit a 2wd vehicle with some slight fabrication, since you already have a cooler kit, you'll need Leroy's harness extender to have sufficient harness length to move it out of the engine bay unless you want to wire/solder in the extra wire length you need
