Brake Drums and Axle Seals

Axle seals as well as the pinion seal on the front of the differential will sweat but this is normal, if it is dripping get it done quick. If it contaminates the shoe linings they will have to be replaced. Once gear oil gets the brake linings contaminated it can cause that side brakes to lock.

"If it was leaking would differential fluid make it out or just all the bearing grease?"

The bearing rides in the gear oil which comes down the axle tube. No bearing grease.

Thank You much, since I dont seem to be missing a drop of gear oil, and my shoes and drum seem real nice I'll assume the axle seals are good. Now that I have it all cleaned up I'll check it again next weekend to see what new mess might be in there or if its nice and dry.

Well after I fixed the rear drums, the truck seems to stop a little better. However there was a DTC41 in the PCM, and the parking light was still blinking at me.

I unplugged PCM and brake controller for about 30 minutes, DTC was gone and brake light stopped blinking. DTC41 came back later, but no blinking brake light, and the SES light doesnt come on for this one. It stops cruise control from working, but that was about it.

I went searching for the problem, removed brake switch, tested its functionality, NO and NC contacts work fine. The voltage was on the harness where it was supposed to be. And then I checked continuity to the PCM on the two signals. All was working. Put it all back together and now no DTC either. Could have been some strange connection corosion or something.

If it comes back maybe it has something to do with the brake controller that is wired onto the brake signal line.
