Bought a trailer, did I go too big?

Picked up a few more bits for towing:

Husky centerline equalizer/sway hitch - http://www.huskytow.com/FTP/HuskyFeaturedProducts/HuskyCenterLine/Featured_CenterLineHitch_hv.html

That is one hell of a hitch! It's freaking huge! Good for up to 11000 lbs.

Husky 2 5/16 ball. 12000 lb rating.

Master lock 2 5/16 hitch lock

Rubber rear skirt for the truck that slips on over the reciever. Nice unit that pops right off when I don't want it. Similar:http://www.dyersonline.com/rock-sol...m_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase

Mirror extensions. These are kind of different. They suction cup on to the stock power mirrore and allow you to adjust then by moving the stock mirror.

Couple tire chocks finished off the buying spree.....:rolleyes5:

Having the right suspension and tow package and not enough power is going to risk either a pleasant vacation or an engine. With power also comes efficiency and capability of course. At a minimum need to get a boost fooler on there, thats just like $8.

Way ahead of ya.

I've got the base support systems almost sorted out.

Parts are already on order for an adjustable fooler and Tunercats II with a Westers VDF will be in my hands sooner or later.....I'm thinking sooner.

Intercooler and WMI are being considered.

Exhaust will be done when it wears out (by the looks of the rust on the factory down pie, it might be soon).

P400 may be on the far horizon if it all grenades.....but the truck will be well set up for it and ready to go by then. All that will be required is sorting out the pan clearance.

Cummins swap is out due to weight over the IFS. Duramax is a possability, but cost, downtime and complexity will make it an "opertunity find" kind of swap (IE: too good of a deal to turn down, not liklely to happen).

I generally don't go at building a vehicle without a reasonably thought out plan.....

GW, When you get ready elaborate extensively on doing your own tune. I am curious. Please explain in very simple terms as well.

I'll do my best and start a separate thread.

I'm looking at roughly $1000 in start-up costs if I buy it all and build nothing so it probably won't be a common thing for guys to do.

If I ever get to the point where I'm confident enough in my own work, I may offer "services" to others for little or no charge. By little I mean your shipping costs plus a small amount for my troubles. I dunno, somewhere around 50 bucks or less sounds fair to me. But it will be an "as is" offer to gents with the understanding that if they blow up their truck it's their problem. Although I would have no problem with guys sending PCM's back and forth for another try or a different tune.

But that's years away from right now....

And now, because everyone likes pics here's the new rig first day home in the driveway:

2011 Flagstaff. Picked it up this morning and it's only been in the driveway 1.5 hours. It's a 2011 26RLSS (rear living room, super slide). It's one of thier "superlight" (what they call it) trailers, weighing in at 5228 Lbs dry. It's power everything right down to the stabilizers and hitch jack.

Here's the floor plan:

26RLSS.jpg

My Tekonsha Voyager controller wasn't working when we plugged it in, so it came home without trailer brakes. Illegal, but it only had to go about 8 miles. I also didn't have the sway bar/load levelers on yet. the truck dropped about 2 inches with the load so it's nice and close already. Setting hte bars up properly should have it all nice and even with only a slight load on the bars. Perfect for sway control to work.
The truck didn't really notice the weight was back there that much, at least not as much as I thought it would have. About another 100 degrees on the pyro when accelerating and didn't hardly buck or pull at all on pavement irregularities. Overall, I was pretty pleased with the old girl. We were mostly 65 KPH and below though.

Now that the wife has her un-godly expensive toy that MY truck has to tow, it's time to hit her up for that $1000 bill for my tuning software......;)

Nice rig and congrats. I picked mine up today as well. Actually the guy at the ex shop that did my Dually said the factory muffler is more restrictive than the soot trap. Not sure if I buy into that so I lost both...:D

BJ check out www.activesuspension.com it really helped me with my tows so simple yet effective when I'm hooked to the g/n with my JD 2020 tractor & implements rear axle loaded to 4480# my truck sits dead level combine GVW truck/trailer 18,700#, my biggest scale weigh load 23,900# combined moving my backhoe puts 4180# on rear axle also sits dead level, my 6' bed loaded with sod to just above the bed rails, I'm still level with that also and the anti-wrap/sway they talk about in their video works as well really helps with maneuvering/cornering loaded or unloaded. I did not note any mpg savings as result but rest of the claims have held true, mine has been on for 7 years now

Your trailer is a wee bit heavier than mine, I believe my dry weight is 5700 lbs. I also have the tekonsha voyager brake controller and am not disappointed with it but would have preferred negotiating a better controller such as the p3. I knew squat about controllers so didn't know about various stuff. If you read my sig you'll see the mods I have done and in truth I can keep up with a later model dmax who is hauling one of those big arsed 38ft trailers. If a 1st gen dmax was towing heavy like that I'd leave him behind. My next step would be an intercooler to compliment the water injection. Ed

Did you buy Tunercat II from Moates and do they provide a definition file for the 6.5 with it? Did you get just your year or each year definition file for the 6.5s, because I think 96, 97 and 98+ were different. I have sent questions to Moates but dont really get satisfactory answers on what I can get, and I have bought a lot of stuff from them.

Did you buy Tunercat II from Moates

yes, but you can't buy it without purchasing (or already owning) a Roadrunner emulator. Licensing issues.

and do they provide a definition file for the 6.5 with it?

No.

Did you get just your year

Yes.

or each year definition file for the 6.5s,

no.

because I think 96, 97 and 98+ were different.

Yup, so is each year after 98. There's even 2 possible vdf's for 98. WTH was GM thinking?

I have sent questions to Moates but dont really get satisfactory answers on what I can get,

It takes a couple days but I email direct to a certain individual there and get the answers I need. They get a lot of "tire kickers" and get pretty tired of answering the same questions over and over with no sales from them.

and I have bought a lot of stuff from them.

So have I.

:)

Geeze, that last post would have taken me all day to quote like that! :) I'll be following your threads closely GW. I take great interest in the programming aspects from the programmers point of view.

Geez Ed, that is a fairly quick 6.5 you got there. At first I thought HOLY CRAP! he hit 120 quick.....then I realized that is kilometers per hour.....what is that around 70? Still friggin impressive!
