Block heater making noise..........

I have to find out about the block heater. yours was silent at first then it started working all on it's own Matt? Hmmmm....i wonder if i just need to use it a bit? The upper radiator hose is slightly warm(but it's barely noticeable), but when i compare it to the pickups radiator hose after both being plugged in all night, the pickup's is much warmer than the blazers.

Like was mentioned there are different wattages so can't really compare the 2 unless the same.

Mine ALWAYS worked. Just now I seem to hear it. It has always worked each and every time I hooked it up.

FWIW, when I bought the truck, the cord was neatly wrapped up with a ziptie in a fashon of new status.

I'm not sure if it was replaced before I bought it or if someone just ran the cord under hood to use, or if it was just never used before I bought it. No idea.

But audible or not, it has always worked.
 
Last winter I thought mine had stopped working so I checked for resistance at the block heater's plug. The Zero ohms = the need for a new block heater = happy starting truck. Not sure what the resistance is supposed to be on a new one so I can't comment as to how to diagnose for a reduced performance or what a corroding unit would be. Cheap to replace and easy to do. I was without a garage and had 3' of global warming on the truck. Then there's anti freeze....

I ohmed out both the pickup's and the blazer's block heater's at the cord and got roughly 24-25 ohms IIRC. I"ll double check it again just to be sure.
 
I haven't bothered with the small stuff but I have the big rig ona timer and I have been pluggin in. Makes for less warmup in the AM. Nieghbors don't like that Cummins. I miss the Cat. Quiet as a church mouse.

try playing with the cord on yours, mine worked if i played with the cord , i just got a new cord.

Brand new cord installed. I'll test it out tonight by leaving it plugged in overnight.

I'm sure you've seen the footage of the Patriots/Titan's spanking in the snow... it'll be 70 tomorrow......... Only in New England.
 
On my 97 I plugged it in, didn't hear it making noise, followed the cord only to find it not plugged in to anything. I guess international diesel crap doesn't come with block heaters. New heater and cord from dealer for $42 even.. ill get in put in some time...
 
That's why I went with the 2 1000w heaters. My theory is that if I only have to plug it in for a couple of hours I'll use less electricity the leaving it plugged in all the time when it's really cold. When it's -30 to -40 it seems to take about 6-8 hours to do much good with the factory 600w. At -35 I plugged it in for 2 hours and it fired reluctanly but it did fire.

For you it's a MUST.....Anything under -10 or -20, is friggin COLD.

Also, I would imagine it makes the difference of "start" or "no start"......Where as regular cold is, "noisey hard start", "hard start", "regular start."

I find that if I plug in, I'm looking at an extra $100 - $150 a month.
 
500 watts of power?? I have a 60 amp service (glass fuses) at the house, and 120 volt (breakers) at the garage...no wonder I popped the breakers when I tried plugging the truck in. :(
 
It's like running a hair dryer on medium heat all the time, when ever it's plugged in. Well it at least is using the same wattage. I have mine on a heavy duty outdoor timer. I had it set to come on 3 hours before I leave in the mornings but I now have it set for 4 hours. It sure has saved on the electric bill. 20 bucks for the timer has probably saved me 40 to 60 bucks a month on the power bill. just my .02
