I don't remember hearing this last year. Its a good hum/gurgle sound hard to explain, but can hear it easily when right next to the truck in the dead silence of the night....

anyone else? Or is mine gonna crap out?

Yesssss all perfectly Normal

The 1500 watt heater on my CAT really makes noise.

Sort of a whooshing frying sound.

The water heater here at home makes the same noise when its heating up after a bunch of water has been moved though the tank.

Your heater is doing its job.

Missy

Us Canucks freak out when we can't hear that little sucker burbling and hissing at night... means we aren't starting in the morning. I always plug things in and then stand there until I hear the heater start to hiss.

You oughtta hear the racket 2 block heaters make when they're both plugged in! On a crispy -40 winter day, you can hear them hissing as soon as you walk out the door.

I find it strange that i can hear the blazer's heater make the first Pops and hiss for a second, and then i can't hear it.

The pickup i can hear it hissing.

I've heard there are 600 and 1000 watt heaters. i wonder if the 6.2 goodwrench has the 600 watt heater in it and the pickup has the 1000 watt heater.

I use the block heater on the big rig year round. I just plug the sucker in at night when I get in from a run.

The engine never cools off and I seldom get antifreeze leaks at hoses and such.

The cost to run the heater is far cheaper than repairs me thinks..

I wonder if you could get by with a 300 watt or maybe even less if all you're doing is maintaining... say you've driven it that day, and driving it next day, small heater, summertime heater. Might pay for itself.

Thats why these sites are so good, you can compare with many other 6.5's to see if youre normal, or abnormal conditions....

Ahh... 'Top Gun' of the 6.5's... lol

I see to be having a block heater issue. I can't "hear" it working in the blazer, but when i unplug the cord from the wall i get a tiny spark. My pickup does the same thing, yet i can hear the heater in it. Do the heater's get weak over time or do they just burn out.

Matt your spot on about this place. It is very helpful. :D

A - I think 400w is the lowest you can get, Matt...

B - Dave: over time, not only can the heating element wear out, but corrosion on the surface of the element acn render them fairly useless... it gets to be like insulation between the heating element and the coolant.

Just like an electric kettle in your kitchen, or an electric water heater in your basement or RV.

I suppose you could pull it and clean it with CLR, but I wouldn't... once it's out, mine gets a new one.

Jim, i think your spot on. This truck sat for a long time. I wonder if that's the problem. I'll find out as the winter months progress i suppose.

Dave that is exactly how mine use to be. I use to look for the spark also! Now I notice it makes noise, and didn't notice the spark, but the cord I been using has a lighted end on it, eliminating the complete darkness.

Is yours working?

I know whem mine is plugged in for a few hours I can put my hand on the upper radiator hose, intake, alternator, and feel the heat.

I have to find out about the block heater. yours was silent at first then it started working all on it's own Matt? Hmmmm....i wonder if i just need to use it a bit? The upper radiator hose is slightly warm(but it's barely noticeable), but when i compare it to the pickups radiator hose after both being plugged in all night, the pickup's is much warmer than the blazers.
