another difference between OBD1 and OBD2 that has an effect on starting, OBD1 does not start lift pump until cranking, where OBD2 does (during Glow cycle)
 
Yes, modding the lift pump circuit to run during glow would help starting. Thats what I recommend when people do the OPS relay modification.

Also I would never purchase the OEM type alternator. The CS130 is a bad one, but the aftermarket Iceberg series helps correct the issues with them and can get 140amp, 160amp or 170amp versions so there is not so much strain on the electronics. That or a CS144 is much better, but needs a little bracket fabrication to get it on there right.
