Banks Ram Air CAI - Anybody running one??

Yup, I even removed the bottom tray for more of a ram-air effect from below the bumper, which normally you keep. It got plenty of dirt in it, but that was from driving on gravel roads and stuff. I cleaned it once a year and it worked flawlessly.

S&B intakes have done very well for several years now. I looked at those for my Chally. I ended up buying an AFE intake but sold it after a week. It was entirely too loud for my tastes.

I read and read and after all the research that I did, I realized that I wasted my money. I bought an SRT intake and put that on instead of the stock set up. The stock intake flows more than plenty and the only real difference is on the R/T's, there's a resonator and on the SRT's, there is not. The opening in the bottom of the air box is *slightly* larger on the SRT'S as well.

I think that intakes are getting obsolete these days. Manufacturers are designing these so well these days that an aftermarket intake is doing nothing more than allowing hot, heat soaked air into the engine.

I would like to see Banks' ram air intake set up. Cervini makes one for Challengers but it's pretty much been proven not to make any more than 5 h.p. or so, just like every other intake out on the market today. People have done test after test and determined that the stock intakes are flowing more than enough air.

Will, do some research on it, if you haven't done so already. Those things arent cheap and I'd hate to see you throw money away for nothing more than bragging rights.

Thanks Nick!!

I think I am going to stay with the stock GM HD filter assembly. I still have more filtering area with the stock filter, and the nice clean MAF that I have, even with some of the dusty conditions that I drive i tells me how well the GM filter works.

Thanks.

I noticed a significant improvement in butt dyno performance on our 02 Suburban, and I can only assume his 04 is similar. I do agree that OEM intakes have gotten leaps and bounds better, but they weren't quite there in 04. ;)

I think the GM truck intakes have been pretty decent for a few years now. I can visually see the 04's in my mind and what they look like. If I remember right, they have a large tomor looking resonator in the tube somewhere dont they?

If you're gonna do it, I personally would stick with a handful of brands. AFE, S&B, Volant, or Banks. We all know which one is the most expensive. S&B seems to be the cheapest. Banks uses S&B filters in case you didn't know.

You want something with a sealed air box. Those open filtered intakes are garbage in my opinion. It's defeating the whole purpose of "cold air." Many people have done studies on this stuff, not just the filtration, but the temp of the incoming air. Too hot and it's leaning out your motorThese engiens, like cool, dense air and most if not all intakes tend to heat soak with a motor that's been running for a while, especially if you've been flogging it.

No air filter that's open is gonna be a cold air intake. Sure, it may flow better but it's sucking in some hot ass air. Manufacturers are designing these systems with completely closed off air boxes that feed from behind the headlights or fender well for a reason. And the reason is simple. It's not hot, underhood air.

Amsoil makes a really good, high flowing dry filter drop in replacement. I would look into a cheaper method at modding your stock air box. Maybe try to replace the elbow tube so that it's a smooth flow, without a resonator or the usual ribbing material. That link above looks good. That in conjunction with an Amsoil drop in filter and you got a free flowing, excellent filtering intake. Look at the cost though. Thats a lot of coin just for a molded plastic tube. Between that and the filte,r you've just spend $200. Spend another 40 and you got one of the better intakes out on the marker.

For the Duramax trucks, they make a really nice intake and I really liked mine. The box was completely sealed off from the underhood air and only fed through a small hole in the bottom fo the box and mostly through the fender well. But for the gassers, specifically, your 5.3, I'm not sure what they look like. For the money, they're your best bet.

By the way, I don't sell nor am I endorsed with S&B. I'm just telling you my personal preference. I did look at those for my Challenger 5.7 but opted to stay stock.

If I had your truck and was looking for an intake, I would get an S&B, provided that it's a sealed box.

Thanks Nick!! I agree, I would want something totally sealed. As you know, after winters, the under hood of our trucks is soaked in salt.

Does that S&B unit have a clear lid, or are they just now showing it?? I will not buy anything that does not have a lid.

Thanks for the info on heat soak, that was something I was pondering also.

Any idea if the S&B Intakes work as well on the Powerstrokes, particularly the 6.0L??

I am thinking of the Amsoil/Donaldson EA for my nest filter change, as I want dry only, no oil.

Yes, mine has that tumour tube. LOL, will have to remember that one.

Thanks

I think most have the clear lids. It's an oiled filter though but the MAF should be far enough up stream that you won't have ay problems. I've never actually seen or heard, nor had any problems myself with oil getting on the MAF. I personally think that's nearly impossible to happen, especially with a factory oiled filter. It's not exactly dripping with oil.

I know nothing about Powerstrokes but I know a guy who I got a good deal on an S&B intake for and he told me that it made quite a bit of difference and his truck didn't smoke at all anymore after that, basically meaning that now it was getting enough air to burn the fuel.

AFE also makes a good dry flow filter in case you didn't know.

We do have a couple Amsoil dealers here.
