When you first turn on the gauge does the reading hang at 200 degrees when everything is cold? Engine off.

My readings are 200 degrees too hot at the top end and I want to be sure it is hooked up properly. The cold reading of 200 is confusing.

My readings are 1100 unloaded and hit 1400 towing. Would it be 200 degrees off on the gauge? This is a 6.2 repower with a GM3 turbo. I suspect the timing may be retarded due to it being quieter than the 6.5. ½ turn on the 6.2 IP screw. Very light black smoke at 1100 degrees.

Unloaded you should be like 500 easy cruise 900 tops I would think.

Sounds 200 off. Should read zero.

Did gauge read zero before install or 200?

You didn't cut the thermocouple wires did you?

No cuts to the wires. Gauge reads 200 at first power on and every one after that. Install by the book in the pre turbo location RH manifold.

Double check all wiring, would have to say defective gauge if it doesn't have to be manually zeroed out or any special direction.

That seems strange, isn't it a mechanical gauge? Mine only uses 12v for the light.

I went to look at mine but it won't come out of the hole. I would double check the ground and if it still reads 200* high I'd send it back.

When you hit the key it should go to zero. Give Auto meter a call tomorrow. Their customer service is very good. My bet is that the thermocouple is defective. Talk it through with them and I bet they will send you a new one out for nothing.

Good friend of mine ran his burb up some grades with heavy load on to check things out before a long trip. Was very pleased with the EGTs as they were steady no matter how hard he ran up the hills. Then the engine, a very expensive one, went THUNK. When he got it back home he noticed the gauge was still reading the same as it was at WOT!

Do yourself a big fat favor and get another gauge in there ASAP.

If so equipped, also check to see that the transportation wire is off the back of the meter, to keep the meter from beating itself to death, sometimes there is a jumper across both terminals to put a false load on the meter so it ships loaded on the needle/meter windings. This would be on the style meter that direct reads off the K type thermocouple without amplifier

A lot of the Autometer gauges are in fact amplified. The needle movement is driven via a stepper motor, -hence the extra power lead on the backside of the gauge.

Call them and get it sorted out, -their service is top notch. It sure sounds like you got a defective unit there....

I just checked my Autometer ,with the key off it is a hair above zero and with the key on it is dead centered on zero. It is about 45 degrees outside.
