ATT on a ford?

DB4 very similiar to what is on the 6.2/6.5's. It is actually a bigger pump in all regards. They have a redline of 3300, but pull best when you keep em under about 2700-2800. They ARE prone to headgasket and block failures when turbo'd though, and was said to one of the reasons FORD only offerred them as a turbo'd option and not standard equipment from 92.5-94.5.

Other than this potential headgasket failure it sounds like a great candidate for the ATT.

Maybe there is a head stud kit for the 7.3 that could help.

I had an '89 Ford 7.3 without factory turbo and it was a pig. I bought the HyperMax turbo kit, which is a non-wastegated turbo similiar to the ATT and it was like driving a new truck. We go to Ft Bragg CA each summer and the grades between Clear Lake and Willits used to have the truck bogged down to about 25mph in 2nd gear (5 sp tranny). With the Hypermax, I could acclerate up those grades at any time I wanted. Amazing difference! I sold the Ford because of the 5sp, it was nothing but work towing with the "gear rower". Wife didn't like the "primitiveness" of the '89's interior either. After towing with my '99 6.5, I wish I'd kept the Ford as it had lots more power and NO cooling issues.

I know my uncles 92 with a non wastegated BANKS turbo has had cooling issues pulling grades with a load in tow. The 7.3L does pull better down low in the RPM's than the 6.5 does, but my 6.5 made his 7.3L look like a snail once you got em up in the RPM's.

I am fairly certain the 6.9/7.3 had the DB2 on it. It was slightly different than the 6.2/6.5 DB2, the throttle cable hooked up to the passanger side of the pump if I remember right.

Interesting how all this pans out. Towing my 25' travel trailer, the '89 Ford could run circles around my '99 6.5L with the AC running to boot. The 6.5L is a much more comfortable ride for long trips but even after doing thousands of dollars in mods, it still just isn't the towing machine the 7.3IDI was. I'm hoping a new radiator and ATT will liven it up.

Whats your limiting factor?

Matt,
I'm not sure! When it comes to towing reasonably heavy, 7K+, in steep hills, in the 100+ degree northern CA summer heat. The 6.5L has not performed nearly as strong as the old indirect injected Ford. I'm not complaining, just stating the results of road tests pulling the same trailer up the hills with the same outside temps. I'll keep working over the 6.5l in an attempt to conquer at least one hurdle, either the cooling (so I don't have to turn off the AC and run the heater when towing up hill) or getting the power so that I'm not at 25mph at the top of the same grade that had the 7.3 doing 65!

I had both with the Ford and was hoping I can get the same out of the Chevy.

Well, after begging and pleading with this guy to try out the ATT so my own curiosity would be satisfied he decided his wallet needs to fatten back up before buying a Turbo.

However I have spied a 94 7.3 IDI Turbo that might could afford and use to experiment with.

now the ultimate in dumb questions ..... how would an ATT do on a 460 gasser?
