Has anyone had to remove a evaporator core from a 96 GMC? Well, here are some pictures. I wouldn't recommend it! LOL But mine did need a good cleaning.

That is absolute insanity that all that has to come apart to reach the evap core.

The engineers must have been using Meth when they designed it.

Did you get it all back together and working again??

One thing about it, with iot down that far, I would sieze the oportunity and replace the ignition switch, brake switch and anything else thats handy while I was in there.

The HVAC system install on the GMT400 trucks absolutely sucks.

The evapcore and the heater could have been built so they could easily come out with the removal of a cover plate.

My class 8 Western Star has one little cover to remove and both cores are easily slid out.

Hope that all is well now.

You must not have any women that ride with you! LOL

Only if they have too, and usually they aren't too happy about it! LOL...

I actually was going to go to my sisters house about 1.5 hrs away, and loaded up to take my truck as its WAY more comfortable long distances then her compact car :), and we got about 2 miles from home, and with the windows open and rear slider cracked her hair was everywhere...

LOL... We turned around and took the car!:mad2:):h

Have done it twice now, steering column does not have to come out, just push seat back as far as it can go, remove support braces, tilt steering wheel up as far as release will let it go lay steering column into the seat.

Dash rolls down on pins and gives access to the core, it is a PITA took me about 14 hrs 1st time, 8 hrs 2nd time, if going in there replace the core, the aluminum gets brittle over time, once every 10 years is about all I ever want to do it.

Changing the dryer on my 98 I cracked the fitting, and last year the core in my 90 started leaking, that wasn't any fun either, so 2 cores in last 2 years I'm expert enuff to not wish this job even on my enemies.

X2! Last Spring, I replaced my badly cracked dash with an almost perfect one out of another 94 C-series. While in there, I pulled the A/C system apart and replaced both the heater core and the evap core. Also went in and cleaned all the duct work with hot soapy water and then rinsed it all out before reassembly. New accumulator, lines and a SanDen compressor conversion - it'll be a long time before I have to mess with that mess again!

Ditto, about the same time for me, working slow - if it ever
needs doing again, I'm paying the 700.00 in labor :D

I've never done a GMT400 dash yet, but done MANY a DODGE, JEEP, and CHRYSLER and I've never actually pulled a dash all the way out. I normally drop the column down as far as it will go and then swing the dash out and lay it on the seats. I was told that the GM dash is alot easier to do than most of the JEEP dashes I used to do which would take me about 2.5-3 hours. I guess that RANGER I just did the other night was pretty easy as it took me about 20 minutes to have it out. Many of your imports are also pretty easy to do as most of them are set-up as an add on unit that pops out like a module once the glove box is out.

I took my condenser out to get better cooling of the Engine and a larger trans cooler in. I just roll the windows down now. AC makes my eyes and nose run anyway.

I remember my mom had a mid-90's Maxima way back about 10 years ago and they replaced the evaporator under warranty. Took the tech less than an hour... it was exactly like you said- take the glove box out, open the HVAC and the evaporator swings down on pins. It almost seemed like it made sense.

That's crazy to have to completely strip the dash out. 14 hours? Man I would have lost my mind and every window would have been smashed by that point.

I did a 1998 Dodge, then a few weeks later did the GMC.
Never done either before - Dodge was 8 hours, GMC 12

I did my 88 dodge, 8 hrs as well. I thought that had to be the worst design. Now I know better.
